    • A carton (11) with parallel flat front and rear surfaces joined by curved sides and a flip-top lid (10) hinged to the carton. The carton is composed of two superimposed layers adhesively secured at a joint line at lapped edges. The outer layer is slit along its front surface parallel to the carton ends and along upwardly extending curves around the sides to a fold line parallel to and raised above the front slit and the inner layer (12) has a cutout in its front surface above the front slit of the outer layer. The cutout curves upwardly short of the sides where tags (13) are cut out of the sides of the inner layer and the outer layer overlaps the inner layer at the carton ends. Top and bottom closures are adhesively secured to the outer layer at the ends of the carton.

    • An arbor guiding apparatus is disclosed. It has a plurality of arbors arranged at least in two rows of arbors and in tandem on a rotary packing drum with respect to its axial direction. It also has a guiding device of the arbors in the radial direction. The guiding device includes supporting members axially supporting the arbors as well as connecting rods. One of the connecting rods include a threeway shaft at its one end, one way of the shaft being for engagement with a cam follower for guiding the arbor in the first arbor row while another way of the shaft being for engagement with a cam follower for guiding the arbor in the second arbor row. It further includes a device for effecting a relative movement of the arbors in the first and second arbor rows. The relative movement device essentially includes a pinion interposed therebetween.

    • Apparatus for transferring partly formed soft packs of cigarettes, the adhesive in whose folded bottom ends may not have fully set, comprises a pair of air cylinders 54,56 which are pivotally mounted for alternately swinging into successive open-sided pockets 20 of a drying drum 12. As a soft pack 16 on a pack-forming drum 10 is stripped off its mandrel 14 by a pusher 62, one of the two cylinders engages its bottom end and maintains slight compression of the end during transfer.     • A packing machine for cigarettes, in particular for soft packs, with a plurality of pack-forming assemblies 1-16, has at least one operating member 21-23 in each assembly which is movable, e.g. to clamp a sheet of foil 300 or a paper lable 400 against a packet mandrel 20. The assemblies are each indexed past a number of stations at each of which a drive shaft 33 (FIG. 3) engages a coupling shaft 35 connected to the respective operating member. The shafts lie perpendicular to the direction of movement of the assemblies and they engage with one another through a tongue 34 and fork 36 coupling.The coupling shaft 35 may be connected to the operating member through an eccentric 52 or, where the operating member has to be moved linearly, through a rack and pinion 61.

    • A wrapping machine for U-folding a sheet of wrapping film or material around a group of cigarettes which are being conveyed along a longitudinal path to a wrapping station. The sheet of wrapping material is fed transversely into the path at the wrapping station and held there by a pair of suction rollers. Reciprocating longitudinally along the path is a receiver into which the group of cigarettes is conveyed. Before the group of cigarettes reaches the wrapping station, the forward end of the receiver engages the sheet of wrapping material and strips it from the suction rollers to form a U-shaped fold about the group of cigarettes as the group moves forwardly out of the receiver into the wrapping station. Thus, the group of cigarettes itself is not subjected to the stress required in removing the wrapping material from the suction rollers.
