    • A serial color printer equipped with a cassette holder (3) that carries an ink ribbon cassette (3) dismountably on a carriage (2) of a printing head, and is tiltably mounted on said carriage (2) so that the ink ribbon may be moved in a direction vertical to said platen. The ink ribbon (7) includes a plurality of longitudinally parallel color regions, and can change the color adapted to the print line along with the movement of the cassette (3). The cassette holder (3) is connected operationally to a tilt arrangement, and the tilt arrangement is equipped with a cam mechanism (12, 15) mounted on the carriage (2), and a drive mechanism for driving said cam mechanism in conjunction with the carriage (2). The respective home positions of the carriage (2) and the cassette holder (3) are discerned by a single position sensor, and when the carriage (2) and the cassette holder (3) are in positions other than the home positions, the initial setting process of moving them to the home positions is carried out.

    • In the printer disclosed herein, shifting of a multi-color ribbon carried on a movable carriage is effected by differentially adjusting the free length of a cable extending parallel to the carriage motion. The cable passes over at least a pair of pulleys on the carriage, at least one of the pulleys being movable with respect to the other in response to changes in the free length of the cable. Solenoids are provided at each end of the cable for controllably changing the free length of the cable, the amount of change being different for the two solenoids so that four different combinations of free length are available. A ribbon shifting mechanism is coupled to the movable pulley so that the multi-color ribbon is shifted in accordance with the free length of the cable.

    • Disclosed is a cartridge and a cartridge assembly for a typewriter, the assembly comprising a pair of case members, each case member having a separate chamber and including means for releasably connecting the two case members in superimposed overlapping relation. First and second pairs of spaced apart ribbon guide means are associated with each of the case members and dimensioned to be aligned, first pair to second pair. Each of the case members includes a separate supply and take-up spool, the supply spool having a fixed axis of rotation and the take-up spool having a shiftable axis of rotation along a translatory path. An opening is provided along one edge of each of the case members, the openings being aligned in the paths while the take-up spools are biased in their respective paths towards the opening. Also disclosed is a drive mechanism for the cartridge in which the type of ribbon (for example, carbon or cloth) is indicated on the cartridge by a cam arrangement and, upon insertion into the machine, automatically selects the correct feed and ribbon lift mechanism to minimize ribbon wastage.
