    • A technique for qualification of loops for new digital subscriber line services (DSL) involves use of an expert system, such as a neural network. A database of loop characteristic information and performance data enables the expert system to train or learn how to predict performance for future loops. In response to data characterizing a new loop to be qualified, the trained expert system predicts digital subscriber line performance for the new loop. Typically, the prediction enables classification of service capacity for the new loop into one of several classes corresponding to levels of DSL service offered through the network. The database for use by the expert system is updated as each newly qualified loop is brought into service and actual performance for that loop is known.

    • The invention relates to a method of intercepting calls between two or more subscribers (A, B) of a communications networks (KOM) and to an interception manager and a service control platform for supporting the implementation of the method. For each of the calls, at least one of a plurality of service control points (SCP1 to SCP3) can be triggered by a service switching point (SSP1 to SSP3). The communications traffic between service switching points (SSP1 to SSP3) of the communications network and the service control points (SCP1 to SCP3) is routed through an interception manager (LIM) which is central to all service control points. The central interception manager (LIM) is triggered for a call when one (SCP1) of the service control points (SCP1 to SCP3) is triggered for this call by one (SSP1) of the service switching points (SSP1 to SSP3). When triggered for a call, the central interception manager (LIM) monitors the communications traffic between the respective service switching point (SSP1) and the respective service control point (SCP1) for the respective call and, based on information exchanged between the service switching point (SSP1) and the respective service control point (SCP1) and on predefined filter criteria, determines whether the call should be intercepted or not.

    • The present invention discloses a method for reducing battery power consumed by an integrated services hub supporting a plurality of telephone lines. The status of power to the integrated services hub is monitored, and upon detecting a failure of primary power, each of the telephone lines is polled to detect an off-hook condition. The status of power to the integrated services hub is monitored while polling, and the polling is stopped upon detecting a return of primary power to the integrated services hub or upon detecting an off-hook condition in one of the telephone lines. Polling is performed by placing one of the telephone lines in a standby state and the remaining telephone lines in a disabled state and monitoring the telephone line in standby state for a predetermined amount of time to detect an off-hook condition. After the predetermined amount of time has lapsed, the monitored telephone line is changed from standby state to disabled state, and the next of the plurality of telephone lines is placed in a standby state, while any remaining telephone lines remain a disabled state. This polling sequence is repeated during active polling.
