    • The invention is a variable damping circuit for a loudspeaker that provides for frequency dependent control of a loudspeaker by an amplifier. The variable damping circuit includes an amplifier, at least one loudspeaker, a pair of connectors between the amplifier and the loudspeaker, and a reactive component wired in parallel with a resistor connected to one of the pair of connectors between the amplifier and loudspeaker, wherein the resistance value of the reactive component and resistor does not exceed fifty percent of a resistance value of the loudspeaker. The reactive component may be a coil, a capacitor, or both a coil and a capacitor both of which are connected in parallel with the resistor.

    • In a proposed cable broadcasting system in which a command signal transmitted from a center equipment to a transmission line for setting an operation mode of a tap device on the transmission line, the command signal can be transmitted without fail even when an instantaneous power failure occurs because of thunderbolt and the like. The center equipment transmits a command signal with a retransmission number indicating the number of transmission plural times at intervals of a time longer than the duration time of the instantaneous power failure. The tap device determines whether the new received data of the command signal is a command to the tap device itself by using the address of the received data. When the command is for itself, it is determined whether the command (received command) coincides with the command previously used for setting the operation mode. When they do not coincide with each other, the operation mode is set in response to the received command. To the contrary, when they coincide with each other, the retransmission number given to each command is compared. When the retransmission number of the received command is equal to or smaller than the previous number, the operation mode is set in response to the received command.

    • DVD reproducing apparatus which transmits variable-bit rate data on a digital serial bus having a predetermined transmission rate. The DVD reproducing apparatus reproduces data from a record medium in accordance with a control signal to produce variable rate data. The data rate of the variable rate data is detected at predetermined intervals of time, a rate of transmission of the variable rate data is established in accordance with the detected data rate, and the variable rate data is transmitted in accordance with the established transmission rate. The DVD reproducing apparatus includes an MPEG decoder which MPEG decodes the reproduced data and which generates the control signal in accordance with amounts of data stored within various buffers, such control signal being utilized to control the reproduction of the data from the record medium. A receiver, e.g., a digital television, having an MPEG decoder therein receives the transmitted data and MPEG decodes the data, but such MPEG decoder does not generate a control signal similar to the previously generated control signal in order to prevent underflow/overflow of the memories therein. In another embodiment, the DVD reproducing apparatus does not include therein an MPEG decoder, but the receiving device's MPEG decoder, unlike the first mentioned embodiment, generates a control signal that is transmitted back to the DVD reproducing apparatus in order to prevent underflow/overflow of the memories within the receiving device's MPEG decoder.

    • A sound emiting device for providing at least one new sonic or subsonic frequency as a by-product of emitting a waveform of at least two ultrasonic frequencies whose difference in value corresponds to the desired new sonic or subsonic frequency. The device includes a parametric emitting perimeter positioned around a central open section. This open section is structured with a diagonal width greater than a cross-sectional diagonal of the parametric emitting perimeter. An ultrasonic frequency signal source and sonic/subsonic frequency generator are coupled together to a modulating circuit for mixing an ultrasonic frequency signal with an electrical signal corresponding to the at least one new sonic or subsonic frequency. The modulator output is coupled to the emitting perimeter which comprises ultrasonic frequency emitting material for propagating the mixed waveform into air for demodulating the waveform to generate the at least one new sonic or subsonic frequency.
