    • A valve assembly is operative for automatically shutting off both a water supply line and gas supply line to a gas-fired hot water vessel upon detection of water discharge, leak or overflow, from the water vessel. The valve assembly is connected in the water supply line and generally includes a valve body, a sliding valve member which is spring biased to a normally closed position, and a water softenable latch which maintains the valve member in an open position against the bias of the spring. The valve assembly is preferably positioned in a drip pan located under the water vessel such that water leaking from the water vessel will accumulate in the drip pan and submerge the valve assembly. Upon exposure to water accumulated in the drip pan, the water softenable latch at least partially softens and releases the valve member to move from its open position to its closed position to cut off water supply through the valve body. In connection with shutting off of the gas supply, a formation on the valve member engages a contact assembly as the valve member moves from the open to closed position. The contact assembly is wired into the power circuit of an electromagnetic valve actuator for a gas supply control valve. Engagement with the contact assembly temporarily disrupts the flow of power to the electromagnetic actuator causing the gas valve to be closed.

    • A water-reacting absorbent cartridge for a release mechanism has multiple layers of water-absorbing paper material compressed into a solid, densified mass with a fraction of the original volume of the paper layers. The compacted cartridge may be wrapped in a tube of heat-shrink material with holes along its sides or may have adhesive interspersed between layers in order to keep the expansible paper layers together. Another water-reacting absorbent cartridge has multiple layers of a super absorbent material interspersed with layers of paper material compressed into a densified mass. The super absorbent material may be a powder dispersed in paper sheets, or in sheet form with paper layers interposed between. The expansible material may be contained in a jacket made of a water-permeable tightly-woven cotton fabric. Further, an oil-reacting absorbent cartridge is made of one or more layers of polyethylene molecular sponge compressed into a "hat shape" with a protruding portion on one side so that it can be seated in an oil detector unit with its expansion force concentrated through its central portion. One or more holes may be punched through the central portion to provide pathways for the oil and speed up the reaction time of the cartridge by a factor of ten.

    • A switch assembly activated by conductive liquids, typically water, and based upon use of a longitudinally slit resilient cylinder, carrying one of a pair of spaced, parallel rod-shaped electrodes at each side of the cylinder wall slit. A bolt passed transversely through the cylinder may be adjusted as to constrict or relax the resilient cylinder to thereby vary the spacing of the parallel electrode rods and the sensitivity characteristics of the switch. Moisture, for example, in the form of sprinkler produced water droplets, or the level of surface irrigation water, may bridge the electrode gap by impinging thereon and spreading longitudinally by surface tension effects. The resulting change in current may be utilized to trip a relay in an irrigation system supplying the activating water droplets, orwhere the switch is used in a level detector system-to provide a precise indicating signal that the monitored liquid level has become accessible to the electrode gap.
