    • An apparatus for facilitating an understanding and recognition of polyphonic and orchestral music in infants and small children includes a housing, a speaker within the housing, a plurality of input devices such as buttons positioned on the housing; and a music generator within for storing and playing at least one prearranged multi-channel musical composition that is constructed and arranged to be able to, in response to actuation of at least one of the input devices by a user, change the identity of channels of the multi-channel composition that are being played over the speaker without interrupting the musical composition as it plays. The apparatus is used in a process that permits an infant or small child to experience complex, polyphonic music from a quality source in a way that maximizes the child's opportunity to learn from and develop in response to the music. It further permits the infant or small child to experiment or improvise with respect to the music, but not in a discordant way, only in a way that will enhance the learning and development process. This entire experience will be afforded to the infant or small child in an apparatus that is visually attractive and safe, so that it may be used even when a parent or caregiver is not closely watching.

    • A curriculum scheduling method includes receiving input data identifying target subject matter, processing the input data to determine an educational standard associated with the target subject matter, querying a database to determine curricula that supports (i.e., contains lessons relevant to) the educational standard, receiving from the user a selection of at least one curricula item from among the determined curricula, and allocated time periods for participation in presentation of the selected curricula item(s). The educational standard may include a group of requirements and the database may be queried based on a requirements selected by the user. A computer-based method of displaying curricula also may include receiving curricula data that includes a sequence of presentation segments and segment marker data, processing the segment marker data to determine information context associated with the presentation segments, and coordinating a display of other curricula data with a display of the presentation segments based on the determined information context. The ordering of the presentation segments may be changed based on a user's comprehension of curricula. The method can also include displaying an interface that includes, e.g., images representing chat rooms associated with particular presentations segments. By selecting one of the images, a user's terminal can be connected to a chat room messaging database to enable chat message exchange. Other method and systems are further disclosed herein.

    • A reading system includes a computer and a mass storage device and software including instructions for causing a computer to accept an image file generated from optically scanning an image of a document. The software converts the image file into a converted text file that includes text information, and positional information associating the text with the position of its representation in the image file. The software records the voice of an operator of the reading machine as a series of voice samples in synchronization with a highlighting indicia applied to a displayed representation of the document and stores the series of voice samples in a data structure that associates the voice samples with displayed representation. The reading machine plays back the stored, recorded voice samples corresponding to words in the document as displayed by the monitor while highlighting is applied to the words in the displayed document.

    • A talking book is combined with a talking, animated toy figure. Each includes a sound synthesizer, a digital memory including at least some speech data to be used by the synthesizer to produce speech and a processor to control the operations of the synthesizer. Each includes a speaker coupled with the synthesizer to actually produce speech and other sounds. The book includes two outer covers and two inner pages, each with some printing. Depressible switches are provided on the inner covers to cue the processor to generate sounds appropriate to the print near the depressed cover switch. Switches in a hinge pin received in hinge rings provided each cover and page to join the covers and pages together are depressed by cam surfaces inside the ring of the front cover and each page and signal, the processor the configuration of the book. In addition to generating its own speech, the book processor transmits a control signal to the processor of the toy figure cuing that processor to generate control signals to generate the appropriate sound and/or sound by the figure synthesizer and/or animation control signals to animate the toy figure. Thus, actions of the toy figure are coordinated with the information provided in the book.

    • An educational toy (10) having a dodecahedron shape is formed with a different visual display on each planar face (17-28). A position sensing mechanism (50) is oriented inside the toy (10) to inform a microprocessor (62) which one of the planar faces (17-28) is in the “up” position. As the toy (10) is turned or moved a signal is generated to “power on” and a musical tune is played. When one of the planar faces (17-28) is stopped in the “up” position, the position sensing mechanism (50) informs the microprocessor (62) and an aural response corresponding to the visual display is transmitted through a speaker (44). If the toy (10) is left alone for a specified period of time, a warning tune is transmitted. If the toy (10) is still not moved thereafter, the toy (10) will automatically “power off”.

    • A portable speech therapy device that enables post-operative cancer patients to practice voice exercises without direct supervision by activating a series of colored indicator lights in predetermined patterns associated with push-button actuation switches. The patient is initially taught to make a certain sound when an associated indicator light is turned on, and then allowed to practice with the device at home. The sequences associated with each actuation switch are made progressively more challenging as the patient masters the sequences associated with each switch (e.g., progressively shorter time periods allowed response, progressively greater number of prompts, or different patterns in which the colored indicators are turned on). The device is field programmable to allow the doctor to tailor sequences to correspond with a patient's recovery progress.

    • A web-based mission certification quiz for educating various persons involved in a fundraising campaign is disclosed. A web-based method for educating solicitors, donors, participants and others involved in a fundraising campaign about the campaign's mission includes providing, on a website, information about the campaign's mission, taking, on the website, a mission certification quiz by answering one or more questions, wherein the questions are designed to test a participant's knowledge about the campaign's mission. The method further includes determining a final score based on the number of correct answers, and creating a mission certificate on the website based on the final score. The method includes starting a timer prior to presenting the question, the timer being set for a predetermined amount of time allowed for each question, providing a question, selecting an answer to the question, wherein the answer is selected from one or more answers provided, and if a correct answer is selected before the expiration of the timer, then only awarding a score for each correct answer. The method further includes determining if there are additional questions in the quiz, and if there are additional questions in the quiz, then answering the questions, and if the are no remaining questions in the quiz, then determining a final score, determining a grade on the basis of the final score, and indicating the final score and the grade on the mission certificate.

The system of this invention includes a microphone for sensing an audible word or command, a video camera for sensing bodily movement, and means for effecting a computer generated response to said audible word or command, or said bodily movement, wherein said response includes both graphical depiction of the letters of said audible word or command, an object image corresponding to bodily movement or said audible word or command, and an action or object related to said bodily movement or said audible word or command, or any combination thereof, so as to effect a progressive learning or teaching experience. The system also provides for direction to a pathway alternative to said system based upon a series of links, similar to the Encarta Encyclopedia, to web pages and the like, where it directs the child to additional sources of information concerning the one or more aspects of the learning exercise. In addition, the system allows for a live or computer mediator to monitor the progress of the learning experience.
