    • A sheet counter has a blade (13) for insertion between adjacent sheets of a stack thereof, and a pin (15) which orbits around the blade to transfer sheets from one side of the blade to the other. A carrier (37) defines three axes disposed in a generally triangular arrangement, the pin (15) being mounted on one of the axes, and the carrier being coupled to a crank (36) about another axis. A link (42) is pivoted at one end to the carrier (37) and at its other end to a fixed part of the counter. As the pin (15) orbits around the blade (13) on rotation of crank (36), the blade is oscillated about an axis adjacent the edge inserted furthest into the sheet stack by a crank (30) and connecting rod (31), driven synchronously with crank (36). Suction is applied in a timed manner to a hole (45) in the blade (13), to assist the separation of the sheets one at a time, before the transfer thereof to the other side of the blade by pin (15).

    • A self-cleaning counting device for particles such as seeds includes a circular housing have a well pivotally mounted therein for receiving and holding particles from a supply hopper. A disk having a plurality of openings is mounted for rotation in the housing such that the openings move past an open side of the well. A vacuum is applied to the side of the disk opposite the well such that individual particles are partially drawn into the disk openings and are carried thereby to a counting station where the particles are counted. After counting, the vacuum is removed and the counted seeds are released to a discharge chute. When a count is completed, the well is pivotable to a cleanout position where excess uncounted particles are purged from the housing.

    • The invention relates to apparatus for counting flexible sheets contained in a stack, such as a pile of banknotes.The apparatus is of the type which has a rotary sheet removing assembly including a number of suction organs to which vacuum is applied in sequence and which contact the side face of a free end of a stack of notes to deflect each note from its initial position and count it.Normally after the machine has stopped and is to be restarted the rotary assembly is moved backwards until one of the suction organs is in the appropriate place to move the next sheet. This presents problems when handling soft or warm sheets.The invention involves rotating the rotary sheet removing assembly slowly in a forward, i.e. running direction, prior to the commencement of the sheet counting operation until each organ is effectively positioned in line with the face of a stack.In the drawing (FIG. 1) the rotary sheet removing assembly (2) is driven by an electric motor (M) through a gear box (GB) driving through a pulley (8) and driving band (6). The special gear box (GB) is so designed that when the motor (30) rotates in one direction it drives the pulley wheel (8) at one speed and when the motor is reversed it drives the pulley wheel (8) in the same direction but at a slower speed.

    • A counter for counting the number of sheets in a stack has a rotor (12) which engages in an edge region of the stack and transfers sheets one at a time from one side of the rotor to the other upon rotor rotation. The rotor (12) is mounted on a shaft (13) carried by a carriage (36) arranged for sliding movement on guides (41). A motor (44) drives a lead screw (43), whereby the carriage is driven along the guides. The rotor (12) may float on its shaft (13) and its position is sensed by detector (39, 40); the output of the detector is used to control motor (44) whereby the carriage is driven substantially continuously and smoothly at a rate appropriate for a counting operation being performed.
