    • A pattern recognition system in which the visual image of the scanned character or pattern is placed within a defined area, referred to as a video space, which contains ideally only picture elements associated with the character to be recognized. Initial alignment of the visual image in the video space is made by one of several prior art techniques (e.g., mark on the form). The pattern of picture elements in this video space are analyzed to determine what the visual image represents and the coded representation of this character is transmitted to associated equipment which includes apparatus for specifying the ideal coordinates or position of the recognized visual image in the video space. To aid in alignment of subsequent visual images in the video space, selected alignment features of the analyzed visual image are computed and these selected features are compared with ideal feature alignment values for the particular character being recognized. The differences between the selected feature values and the ideal feature alignment values are used as alignment correction values for subsequent characters to be aligned in the video space. The recognition of these subsequent characters is more accurate because of the enhanced alignment of the visual images in the video space.

    • An optical character recognition system is arranged to process format conditioning documents which designate the locations of data fields on data documents to be read. Those portions of the data documents outside the data fields which are designated by the conditioning document are rendered invisible to the system, thereby permitting the system to process only data which may be located in the midst of other printed matter. A fine line adjustment capability permits the system to reposition the document as necessary to locate a data field which is not located precisely as had been indicated by the format conditioning document. The system is thus automatically adaptable to any data format without requiring specialized programming. The system samples successive vertical slices of data characters being optically scanned and reassembles the slices electronically for purposes of recognition. The position of each slice is analyzed in order to predict the position, relative to the photo-sensitive array, of the next slice. This permits reliable system adaptation to a data line which is fully or partially skewed relative to its document page. Failure to recognize one or more data characters during scan of a line results in successive automatic re-scans of that line with automatic increase of detection sensitivity during each re-scan to permit characters of relatively light print to be recognized.

    • The specification and drawings disclose an apparatus particularly suited for reading a magnetically encoded credit card. The apparatus disclosed includes a magnetic reading head aligned with a guideway along which the card is moved. Card movement is provided by a drive roll carried on a first frame mounted for pivoting movement about an axis perpendicular to the path of card movement. A pinch roll is arranged to maintain the credit card engaged with the drive roll. Both the drive roll and the pinch roll have their axes perpendicular to the path of movement. The magnetic reading head is preferably aligned with the axis of the drive roll and located so that as a credit card is conveyed between the drive roll and the pinch roll the magnetic stripe thereon is moved past the reading head. Additionally, the magnetic reading head is carried by a second frame mounted on the first frame for pivotal movement about an axis generally parallel to the intended path of movement of the card. The disclosed drive assembly for the drive roll comprises a synchronous motor mounted on the first frame and having a lightweight pulley carried on its output shaft. A relatively heavy flywheel-pulley assembly is drivingly connected with the drive roll and a resilient belt interconnects the light-weight pulley and the flywheel-pulley assembly.

    • A pattern recognition device according to the invention comprises means for scanning an input pattern to derive a representation thereof, means for comparing the representation with each representation of a plurality of known patterns to identify the known pattern most similar to the input pattern and means for deriving an error signal representing a registration error between the input pattern and the known pattern most similar thereto. Means are then provided for utilizing the error signals to produce successive modifications of the scanning waveforms of the scanning means in dependence upon the error signals to tend to reduce the error signal.
