    • An apparatus for detecting a hidden image, which is formed in a first area of a hologram, is disclosed. The apparatus has a laser device for generating a laser beam and projecting the laser beam to the hologram, and a sensing device for sensing light that reflects from the hologram. When the laser beam is emitted to the hologram at a first incident angle, at least one diffractive beam is generated by diffraction of the laser beam. The sensing device is capable of outputting a responding signal according to the characteristics of the diffractive beam. Additionally, if the laser beam is emitted to the hologram at an incident angle, which is not equal to the first incident angle, the diffractive beam cannot be generated so that the sensing device does not output the responding signal.

    • A illumination device sequentially projects a selective set of spatially encoded intensity light pulses toward a scene. The spatially encoded patterns are generated by an array of diffractive optical or holographic elements on a substrate that is rapidly translated in the path of the light beam. Alternatively, addressable micromirror arrays or similar technology are used to manipulate the beam wavefront. Reflected light is collected onto an individual photosensor or a very small set of high performance photodetectors. A data processor collects a complete set of signals associated with the encoded pattern set. The sampled signals are combined by a data processing unit in a prescribed manner to calculate range estimates and imaging features for elements in the scene. The invention may also be used to generate three dimensional reconstructions.

    • Temporal processing for realtime human vision system behavioral modeling is added at the input of a spatial realtime human vision system behavioral modeling algorithm. The temporal processing includes a linear and a non-linear temporal filter in series in each of a reference channel and a test channel, the input to the reference channel being a reference image signal and the input to the test channel being a test image signal that is an impaired version of the reference image signal. The non-linear temporal filter emulates a process with neural attack and decay to compensate for a shift in peak sensitivity and for frequency doubling in a spatio-temporal sensitivity function. The linear temporal filter accounts for the remaining subtleties in the spatio-temporal sensitivity function.

    • An imaging system, methodology, and various applications are provided to facilitate optical imaging performance. The system includes a sensor having one or more receptors and an image transfer medium to scale the sensor and receptors in accordance with resolvable characteristics of the medium.
