    • A system and method for automatic configuration upon installation of a network printer are disclosed. The techniques of the invention avoid the burden of manual configuration by users and system administrators. The network printer is associated with printer description files, a driver, a spooler, and a port monitor. The system comprises bi-directional application program interfaces associated with the spooler for allowing the driver to generate a bi-directional request and receive a bi-directional response. The system additionally includes a syntax within the printer description files for representing and associating the bi-directional request and the bi-directional response with a print feature. The system also includes extension files stored in the driver for relating bi-directional values and printer values and a notification infrastructure controlled by the port monitor for providing a bi-directional notification of configuration changes to the driver and selected applications.

    • In photo studio system 10, a count which represents a number of printing operations with regard to each of the printer 40 and 50 is reset to zero in response to successful establishment of connection of a print server 20 with the management server 70. The printer 40 and 50 are allowed to continuously carry out printing operations as long as the count is reset to zero before reaching the preset value. On the other hand, failed establishment of connection with the management server 70 causes the count to reach the preset value and imposes restrictions on the printing operations with regard to each of the printer 40 and 50. Each of the printers is not allowed to continue printing operations over a long time period in the state of disconnection from the management server. This arrangement desirably prevents the management server from suffering significant losses.

    • As an example of embodiments, there is disclosed a peripheral device control method of realizing a function designated by the user by controlling a peripheral device. The method has an installation function information obtaining step of obtaining installation function information showing what functions have been installed or what functions are not installed among functions which are realized by communicating with the peripheral device, a display control step of controlling a process to display the installed functions or/and the functions which are not installed so that they can be discriminated by using the installation function information obtained in the installation function information obtaining step, a receiving step of receiving an instruction of addition, updating, or deletion of the functions displayed by the displaying process which is controlled in the display control step, and a function managing step of executing at least one of a process to add and validate the function received in the receiving step, a process to delete and invalidate the designated function, and a process to update the function as an updating target to another designated function and validate such another designated function in accordance with the instruction received in the receiving step.
