Each television program may have one or more values that respectively describe one or more television program characteristics. In one implementation, the EPG data is compressed by comparing the one or more values of each said television program with unique combinations of values to find a match. Each value in each unique combination describes a television program characteristic. Each of said unique combinations is in a table that includes a plurality of identifiers, and wherein each said identifier references one said unique combinations. For each said match, one or more values of the television program are replaced with an identifier in the table that references the matching unique combination of values.

摘要： A method and apparatus for validating recommendations generated by a television program recommender uses programmed viewing agents, in which a viewing agent is programmed with a set of rules that characterize the viewing preferences of a modeled viewer. During a training phase, the programmed rules of a viewing agent are applied to a set of training programs to obtain an agent viewing history, which is processed by a profiler to derive an agent profile containing a set of inferred rules. During an evaluation phase, the programmed rules of the viewing agent are applied to test programs to obtain an agent evaluation viewing set. In parallel, the television program recommender generates a set of program recommendations by applying the agent profile to the test programs. The agent evaluation viewing set is then compared with the program recommendations.

Advertisements may be included as part of a broadcast signal, may be acquired from a channel or MPEG stream different from a viewed program, may be downloaded from network including the Internet and may be stored locally in a set top box. Computer program code operating in a set top box selects an advertisement from a plurality of ads based upon indicator information including category and priority level. Viewer category selections may be entered by the user, may be selected in response to use of a personalized remote control, or may be provided in a pre-programmed set top box. Viewer requests for categories of advertisements or for specific advertisements may be processed by upstream equipment to formulate a broadcast schedule.
