    • A method for assembling photographic processing systems of the type for advancing integral, self-processable film units to the exterior of a camera while simultaneously spreading a fluid processing composition in a uniformly thin layer between selected layers of a film unit. A number of processing rollers which comprise the system are provided with a partially textured surface by using an electric discharge machining process having predetermined conditions, and then a number of test processing systems are assembled with these rollers and other pieceparts randomly selected from lots of all other pieceparts which comprise the system. Characteristic film units are processed through the test processing systems, and the fluid layer thickness in each of these film units is afterwards measured and compared with a predetermined standard. If the combination of test system parts provides acceptable fluid layer thickness control performance, the remaining pieceparts of each lot are used in combination with rollers having the predetermined texturing to manufacture additional systems. If the test system performance is not acceptable, the electric discharge machining process conditions are adjusted by a predetermined amount which is sufficient to effect minor changes in fluid layer thickness control that can result in acceptable performance. Rollers are then textured with the adjusted electric discharge machining process and systems are then assembled using the piecepart lots in combination with rollers having surfaces textured according to the adjusted electric discharge machining process.

    • Apparatus for use in a camera of the self-developing type to effect the spreading of a processing fluid in a layer between a pair of superposed sheet materials as they progressively pass through the apparatus. A first spreader element is formed of sheet metal and includes a flat sheet-contacting facing surface and a canted platform extending in advance thereof. A second spreader element is formed of sheet metal and includes an arcuate sheet-contacting facing surface and a pair of wrap-around collars comprising extensions of that sheet metal structure curled back thereupon in the direction of its arcuate facing surface. Each facing surface is substantially uniform in cross-sectional configuration and extends entirely across the sheet metal structure in which it is formed. In manufacturing the latter mentioned spreader element, the wrap-around collars are formed subsequent to the development of its arcuate sheet-contacting facing surface. When the two spreader elements are disposed in their operative positions and as the superposed sheet materials are advanced therethrough, the collars engage respective longitudinal edges of the sheet materials against the aforementioned platform to preclude fluid escaping from between the edges of the sheet materials.

    • Motion picture film processing system employing a dispensing container adapted to express processing fluid onto a strip of exposed film as the film is progressively drawn thereacross. A pair of sheet materials are bonded together to define a substantially flat circular cavity in which a processing fluid is initially stored. A bond is further formed between these materials extending radially of the cavity while a section of the peripheral bond adjacent thereto is weaker than the other sections of the peripheral bond. This weakened bond section is connected to the dispensing container. Thus, when a force applying member is rotated around this collapsible container in a circular path, the radially extending bond acts as a weir to resist movement of the fluid therein. The resulting hydraulic pressure ruptures the weakened bond section causing the fluid to be expelled therethrough into the dispensing container. This system can advantageously be incorporated into a compact, multipurpose, film handling cassette adapted to be mounted in both a camera and a projector and in which the collapsible container is positioned in operative relationship with a rotatably mounted section of the cassette''s housing.

    • A system for rupturing a pod, having a weakened edge portion and containing processing fluid for photographic material, and for expelling the fluid therefrom. The fluid-filled pod is mounted adjacent a support surface which typically forms part of a motion picture film-handling cassette. Such cassette includes a mechanism for advancing the filmstrip within the cassette into operable relationship with an applicator that communicates with the weakened portion of the pod. The cassette is inserted into processing apparatus against the force of a spring and is releasably locked therein by a latch of that apparatus adapted to seat in a recess of the cassette. In one embodiment the forceapplying member is connected to a removable cover plate which forms part of the cassette and which is slidably disposed over the pod. The force-applying member of another embodiment comprises a relatively narrow strip of rigid material slidably mounted on the cassette for displacement across the pod. In a third embodiment the pod-rupturing member comprises a removable cover plate forming part of the cassette and mounted over the pod for displacement against the pod under the force of a roller mounted within the processor. In still another embodiment the pod-rupturing device consists of a roller slidably mounted between a pair of canted guide tracks. In a fifth embodiment the pod-rupturing element comprises a blade pivotably mounted within the processor.
