摘要： A shaping encoder capable of improving the performance of PCS in nonlinear optical channels by performing the shaping in two or more stages. In an example embodiment, a first stage employs a shaping code of a relatively short block length, which is typically beneficial for nonlinear optical channels but may cause a significant penalty in the energy efficiency. A second stage then employs a shaping code of a much larger block length, which significantly reduces or erases the penalty associated with the short block length of the first stage while providing an additional benefit of good performance in substantially linear optical channels. In at least some embodiments, the shaping encoder may have relatively low circuit-implementation complexity and/or relatively low cost and provide relatively high energy efficiency and relatively high shaping gain for a variety of optical channels, including but not limited to the legacy dispersion-managed fiber-optic links.

摘要： An illumination system is disclosed for providing dual excitation wavelength illumination for non-linear optical microscopy and micro-spectroscopy. The illumination system includes a laser system for providing a first train of pulses at a center optical frequency ω1, a frequency converting system for providing at least a second train of pulses at a center optical frequency ω2 and a third train of pulses at a center optical frequency ω3, where ω2 is different from ω1 and ω3 responsive to the first train of pulses, an amplifier system for amplifying the second train of pulses to provide an amplified second train of pulses, and an adjustment means for adjusting a time delay between the amplified second train of pulses and the third train of pulses for the dual-excitation wavelength illumination.

This resonant enhancement is demonstrated for Tm doped aluminosilicate glass fibers where tuning of the fundamental writing beam to a resonance frequency enhances the second harmonic output by a factor of 10.sup.3.

摘要： Applicants have discovered photo-induced second harmonic generation in rare earth doped glass bodies free of germanium. Moreover, applicants have discovered that multivalent rate-earth doped glass bodies can be made with conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in excess of 10.sup.-3 % per watt, exceeding the reproducible efficiency of germanium doped glass. In accordance with the invention, a light source of a desired frequency comprises a body of glass doped with a multivalent rare earth element, an optical input source of light at one-half the desired frequency, and utilization means for receiving light passing through said body and utilizing light at the desired frequency.

According to a method of manufacturing an optical wavelength converter, a fluid consisting of an organic nonlinear optical crystal material introduced in a bending groove in a substrate is crystallized in order starting from the side of one portion of the bending groove to thereby form an organic nonlinear optical crystal in the other portion of the groove, which has the crystal axis and dielectric main axis both inclined with respect to the extending direction of the other groove portion.
