    • Eyeglasses for enhancing visual contrast through the use of hetero-chromic filters are provided. One lens of the glasses is tinted pale green while the other lens is tinted to be a slightly darker yellow. The resulting pair of glasses, when worn, creates color-retinal rivalry between the two eyes to encourage better visual contrast and provide improved vision quality, especially at night. Such hetero-chromic filtration may also be effectively embodied within contact lenses, whether hard, gas-permeable or hydrophilic soft lenses, by incorporating an appropriate dye into each contact lens that is both benign and non-irritating to the eye tissues.

    • An apparatus for preparing a plastic eyeglass lens includes a coating unit and a lens curing unit. The apparatus is preferably configured to allow the operation of both the coating unit and the lens curing unit. The apparatus may also include a post-cure unit and a controller. The controller is configured to control the operation of the coating unit, the lens curing unit and the post-cure unit. The lens forming unit may include an LCD filter disposed between activating light sources and a mold assembly. The mold assembly preferably includes two mold members held together by a gasket. The gasket preferably includes four protrusions spaced at 90 degree intervals about the gasket. A lens forming composition may include a first photochromic compound, a second photochromic compound and a light effector. The light effector may alter the color of a lens when exposed to photochromic activating light, when compared to a lens formed from a lens forming composition which does not include a light effector.

    • A method for mounting safety shields onto eyeglass temples and a kit for carrying out that method. A temple of an eyeglass frame is placed in a channel forming part of a side shield thereafter, a screw is inserted into an opening formed in the side shield and into a member affixed to the temple to create a fastened fit between the temple and the channel which attaches the side shield to the temple. The side shield is placed in its operative position before the screw is inserted into the opening and the fastened fit results from the insertion of the screw into the opening and member which holds the side shield in its operative position. The kit includes a side shield having a longitudinally extending channel into which a longitudinally extending eyeglass temple may be inserted. The channel has an open lateral end through which the temple may be inserted and a supporting lateral end against which the temple may be supported. The side shield further includes an opening extending transversely to both the longitudinal direction and the supporting lateral wall. A screw is adapted to be inserted into the opening and the member so as to force the temple against the supporting end of the channel to create a fastened fit between the side shield and the temple when the temple is located in the channel. Alternatively, a fastener is placed into the transverse open lateral end in the channel of the side shield, to receive a screw which is a adapted to be inserted into the fastener to create a fastened fit and prevent the temple from moving longitudinally within the channel of the side shield.
