    • In general, the present invention provides a viewing and inspection box having a base, a top wall, opposing side walls, and a rear wall defining an interior that is viewed through an open front of the box. An inspection light is held in proximity to the top wall and illuminates the interior of the box. An inspection apparatus, such as a magnifying glass, extends from one of the walls to extend beneath the inspection light. A display panel is maintained between the base and the rear wall at an angle relative to the base, and is further maintained below the inspection apparatus such that the inspection apparatus is positioned between the inspection light and the display panel.

    • A magnifying system is provided to aid in the viewing or reading of book, papers or similar documents by those with impaired vision. A magnifying lens with approximate overall dimensions of eight by eleven inches is supported in an attractive wood or plastic frame of various designs and is supported by a series of four legs in each corner. The legs are adjustable in length by the use of a spring-based telescopic adjustment system that allows the user to adjust for different parameters such as strength of magnification, object size, level of vision impairment and the like. The legs also fold over against the frame in a manner similar to a card table to allow the invention to be carried in a case, a briefcase or just allow for easier transportation with reduced risk of damage.

    • A preloaded device includes a female component having a right-circular cylindrical internal surface and a first helical groove in the internal surface of the female component. A male component has a right-circular cylindrical external surface sized to be slidably received within the right-circular cylindrical internal surface of the female component, and a second helical groove in the external surface of the male component. The second helical groove has the same pitch as the first helical groove so that the second helical groove is in facing relationship along its length to the first helical groove when the male component is assembled to the female component. A spring component is received within the first helical groove and the facing second helical groove when the male component is assembled to the female component. The spring component has three shape distortions thereon equidistantly spaced around the circumference of the spring component so as to press the spring component against the first helical groove and the second helical groove. The device accomplishes a preloaded helical movement of the female component and the male component. The female component and/or the male component may support an optical lens, so that the preloaded device functions as a zoom lens.

    • An optical display system for magnifying the image of a liquid crystal display cell (314) used in a portable electronic device (310) such as a cellular phone or smart card reader having a light focusing and deflecting array (316), a light coupling element (318) and a magnifying lens element (110). The light focusing and deflecting array (316) includes an array of lenslets (410, 412, 414, 416, 418) that receive light rays from the liquid crystal display cell (314) and impart an angular component to the light rays. The magnitude of this angular component increases moving radially outward along the light focusing and deflecting array. The light coupling element (318) couples the deflected light rays to the magnifying lens element without substantial refraction thereof. The magnifying lens element (110) has a unitary lens having a biaxial gradient index of refraction, which causes the light rays to be bent initially outward then inward. The combination of light focusing and deflecting array (316), light coupling element (318) and magnifying lens element (110) produce a magnified image of liquid crystal display cell (314) within a very low profile package.
