    • A low-cost, single focus lens that is formed of only four lens elements in two lens groups, one on each side of a diaphragm, is disclosed. A front negative lens group is formed of a first, positive meniscus lens element and a second, negative meniscus lens element, each with its convex surface on the object side. A rear positive lens group is formed of a third lens element that is biconvex and a fourth element that is made of plastic. The fourth optical element has relatively weak refractive power that is less than 10% that of the low-cost, single focus lens, and at least one surface of the fourth optical element is aspheric. Various conditions are satisfied so as to ensure that aberrations are favorably corrected while keeping manufacturing costs low and so as to ensure that the low-cost, single focus lens is compact.

    • The optical system has a first optical element (11, 17, 19, 26) and a second optical element (12, 18, 20, 27) arranged along an optic axis (10). The optical elements are preferably made from crystalline material with a cubic crystal structure. The first and second optical elements have first and second orientations in relation to the optic axis, which are preferably rotated with respect to each other according to the rotational symmetry of the material. At least one of the first optical element and second optical element is pre-stressed by applying a compressive stress (null,null1,null2) thereto. The compressive stress is applied radially symmetrically relative to the optic axis (10) and compensates for spatial dispersion.

    • A compact photographic lens for a digital camera is disclosed. The photographic lens has only two lens elements, yet provides excellent imaging even at the periphery of the image field. The photographic lens of the invention and an image sensor, together, fit within a volume of about 10 cm3 The lens is formed of, in order from the object side, a biconvex lens element having two aspherical surfaces, and a positive meniscus lens element having two aspherical surfaces. The convex surface of the meniscus lens element is positioned on the image side, and various conditions are satisfied in order to provide the photographic lens with a short overall length while favorably correcting various aberrations.
