    • A miniature crossed coil gauge is provided having an oriented rare earth magnet fixedly mounted on a rotary shaft for supplying a magnetic flux directed transverse to the shaft axis. The gauge housing provided by an upper and lower bobbin surrounds the magnet and supports the rotary shaft. A first and second coil are wound about the gauge housing in a crossed coil orientation encircling the magnet. A flux ring is disposed around the first and second coils axially aligned with respect to the magnet. The magnet has sufficient strength and the flux ring is mounted in sufficiently close proximity to the first and second coils to redistribute the flux supplied by the magnet so that the magnetic flux measured at the surface of the coils is substantially increased relative to the magnetic flux density measured with the flux ring removed. This gauge construction facilitates the fabrication of gauges so small that they can be directly mounted on printed circuit boards using conventional electronic component mounting equipment.

    • Signal-processing apparatus for use with industrial instrumentation systems and the like, and comprising a memory to maintain a signal level for long time periods without drift. An input signal level is translated into the positioning of a movable member, through the use of an actuator motor controlled by the input signal and a position feedback signal. A friction device is coupled to the movable member to hold it in any given position, thereby to serve as a memory for the input signal level. The friction device comprises a thin vane-like element which is secured to the movable member and disposed in the air-gap of a permanent magnet. The air-gap also includes a mass of tiny magnetizable particles which, under the influence of the magnetic field, engage the surfaces of the vane-like element to develop a frictional restraining force. This frictional restraint has the characteristic of being relatively low upon initial movement away from a start point, and thereafter increasing progressively to a plateau level, thereby providing superior dynamic performance particularly in a servo positioning system. Various applications are disclosed including process controllers and chart recorder systems.

    • A device for providing a voltage indicating the angular velocity of rotation of the armature in a limited rotation, polarized, moving iron galvanometer. The device includes a means for providing a first voltage dependent upon the angular velocity of the armature, the self-inductance of the galvanometer drive coil, and the drive current in the drive coil. A compensation coil is magnetically coupled to the drive coil and magnetically isolated from the effects of the rotating armature to provide a second voltage which is dependent upon mutual inductance between the drive and compensation coils and upon the drive current, but is not dependent upon the effects of the rotating armature due to the magnetic isolation of the compensation coil from the armature. A combining means proportionally combines the first and second voltages to provide a voltage indicating the angular velocity of rotation of the armature. The means for providing the first voltage includes either the drive coil, with the first voltage appearing across the drive coil, or a pickoff coil wound coaxially with and adjacent to the drive coil so that the first voltage appears across the pickoff coil and is proportional to the voltage appearing across the drive coil. The velocity signal thus derived is introduced to the drive circuit to provide effective damping.
