    • Physical property of a liquid sample to include a viscometric and/or rheological property if not a structural property such as gelation and/or crystallization can be determined with a rotating viscometer employed in a Scanning Brookfield technique. The viscometer and technique employ a Brookfield-type head having a high torque capacity. Low temperatures may be employed in the scan. For example, properties of a motor oil having a very high viscosity and/or a gelation point owing to its intrinsic properties, oxidation and/or sooting and so on, can be accurately, precisely, rapidly, and repeatably determined.

    • A rotary viscometer has a measuring motor which drives a measuring shaft that carries a disc mounted in an air bearing of a stator. The viscometer has a normal force measuring drive defined by at least one position sensor for determinal movements of the measuring shaft on the basis of viscoelastic properties of the substance to be investigated, such as a liquid. To measure the normal force in the region of the air bearing, the position sensors are disposed in the region of the air bearing on the stator, and in particular they are embedded in the stator and absorb the movements of the disc in the axial direction of the measuring shaft with resect to the stator.

    • An acoustic viscometer and method for determining both the kinematic viscosity and the intrinsic viscosity of a liquid which includes an acoustic wave generator, a transmitting piezoelectric transducer, a receiving piezoelectric transducer, and a phase-shift detector. The transmitting piezoelectric transducer is positioned so as to be in contact with the liquid and is operably connected to the acoustic wave generator. The transmitting piezoelectric transducer propagates a longitudinal wave of known frequency through the liquid. The receiving piezoelectric transducer is spaced apart from the transmitting piezoelectric transducer and detects the longitudinal wave and a corresponding shear wave propagated through the liquid. The phase-shift detector is operably connected to both the transmitting and receiving piezoelectric transducers and measures the difference in phase between the longitudinal wave propagated by the transmitting piezoelectric transducer and the longitudinal and shear wave detected by the receiving piezoelectric transducer. The difference in phase is used to determine the velocity of the shear wave, and the kinematic and intrinsic viscosities of the liquid in terms of liquid density.
