    • Apparatus for obtaining the speed and acceleration of a motor vehicle in which the speed and acceleration are used in combination with exhaust emissions data obtained from the motor vehicle to analyze information about the pollutants being dispersed into the air by the motor vehicle. The apparatus includes a first radiation source producing a visible laser beam received by a first detector and a second radiation source producing a visible laser beam received by a second detector. The first and second radiation sources are arranged along the roadway with a known spacing and at a height so that the visible laser beams are interrupted by the front and rear wheels of the motor vehicle as it passes along the roadway. The detectors provide output pulses indicating whether the visible laser beams are interrupted and the time of the occurrence of each of the pulses is measured and recorded. An analyzer then calculates the speed and acceleration from the known spacing distance and the stored time measurements.

    • An automatic, temperature-compensated liquid or fuel metering device comprises a measuring chamber having a pair of magnetically responsive vertically spaced reed switches therein which are selectively actuated by a magnetcarrying float to control valves associated with the chamber to supply a predetermined increment of liquid to the chamber and thereafter to drain that increment from the chamber into a reservoir. The volume of each increment is dependent upon the spacing between the reed switches, and that spacing is controlled by a bellows having a sample of the liquid being measured sealed therein, the bellows being disposed in the path of flow of liquid to the chamber and being operative to vary the volume of said increments with variations in the temperature of the liquid being measured.

    • Urine-measuring apparatus includes a measuring cylinder of just over 100cc capacity into which a catheter from the patient''s bladder drains. Tubing coupled to an outlet at the bottom of the cylinder extends upwardly to just above the 100cc graduationlevel and then downwardly to a urine-collection bag below the cylinder so as to provide an automatic siphon by which a unit quantity of 100cc of urine is transferred into the bag each time the cylinder fills to that level from the catheter. The top of the cylinder is vented to ambient atmosphere and a non-return valve is coupled to the end of the tubing within the bag, measurement of the drained urine at any time involving a ''coarse'' reading of the bag content made against 100cc graduations of the bag, in combination with a ''fine'' reading of the cylinder content made against 1cc graduations of the cylinder.
