    • A particle fuel burning furnace has an upper combustion chamber for holding a pile of particle fuel and burning the same from the bottom thereof. The furnace also includes a lower combustion chamber for afterburning combustible gases given off by the burning of solid fuel in the upper chamber and a series of spaced apart vertically-extending passageways arranged in a row and interconnecting the upper and lower chambers for communicating the combustible gases from the upper to the lower chamber. A first improved feature relates to a particle fuel delivery control device which operates an auger for filling the upper chamber with particle fuel to a desired level. A beam of light is transmitted and reflected between a photoelectric cell and reflector respectively of the device. When the particle fuel pile has grown in height during filling to the desired level the light beam is interrupted and filling is terminated. A second improved feature relates to a particle fuel diversion structure positioned in spaced relationship above and overlying the row of passageways. The structure forms a horizontal slot which extends laterally from the passageways which prevents particles of fuel from falling through the passsageways and relocates the flame which burns the particle fuel pile from the bottom to a region away from the passageways.

    • A heating device constructed for efficiently burning newspapers by converting them to a carbon-like material and then burning this material in a controlled manner to produce useful heat including radiant heat which may be employed to heat a living space, persons occupying the space, cooking foods, or the like. In one embodiment, the heating device is placed in a fireplace and in a second embodiment encompassed by this invention, the heating device is a free-standing heating device which may be used indoors or outdoors. The heating device includes a supporting structure for supporting folded newspapers in a housing having an open front with the newspapers being retained in place by side pressure exerted by damper screen supporting rods indented into the side edges of the newspapers. The upper end of the housing has an opening communicating with a fireplace chimney, smokestack, or the like, and the lower end of the housing is provided with a draft providing arrangement including a forced air draft which may be controlled to provide appropriate combustion supporting air for efficient burning of the newspapers without residue.

    • A material handling apparatus is described, for example, for delivering bags of garbage to an incinerator. The apparatus includes a plurality of material-receiving compartments, each having a first end at which material can be loaded into the compartment, and a second end from which material can be discharged. Each compartment includes a belt conveyor which forms a bottom wall of the compartment and which is operable to move material longitudinally of the compartment in a direction towards said second end. Side walls of the compartment extend upwardly adjacent respective the opposite sides of the conveyor for laterally constraining material in the compartment. The compartment also includes closure means normally preventing discharge of material from said second end of the compartment, said closure means being adapted to be opened at appropriate times to allow material to be discharged from said compartment by operating the belt conveyor. The apparatus also includes a further belt conveyor positioned to receive material discharged from said compartments and operable to deliver said material to a common discharge location.

    • The invention described herein is made up of a closed tank, which is made to contain water. Flue gases are directed into this tank. Water is sprayed into the flue gases prior to entry to the tank. This water entrains all solid material which falls into the water in the tank and is cleaned out periodically. The matter entrained in the water in the tank floats over a partition into a second compartment where it is skimmed, and the scum is directed into a fire box of the furnace. The effluent water from the second tank is supplied to the sprayer and sprayed into the incoming flue gas as aforesaid.
