    • Improved burner constructions for gas-fired infra-red generators having ceramic fiber matrix through the thickness of which gaseous combustion mixture is passed and as it emerges it is burned to heat emerging surface to incandescence. Burner body can be casting, with sheet metal addition to form a baffle and air-seal and to grip matrix edges. Combustion mixture plenum can have moveable partition assembly separating it from air-seals, to adjust portion of matrix at which incandescence is generated. Metal screen can be stretched in front of incandescent surface to assist with low-temperature operation. Thermal insulation on external portions of burner body can also be held in place with screening. Large size matrix can have central support fitted in joint between matrix segments, and secured to back of burner body. Air-seal can be provided by narrow curtain of air extending around internal faces of burner body. Annealing lehr is desirably provided with gas-fired infra-red irradiation, and can have heat losses reduced by diminishing amount of metal used as in a conveyor to more workpieces through.

    • A combustion chamber for pulsating combustion is separated by a partition wall (12) into a first chamber (14) to which there is connected an axial inlet (20) for the fuel stream, and a second chamber (16) for diverting the combustion gases through an outlet (18). The gases depart via side chambers (44) from the first to the second chamber at the edges of the partition wall. A hot body (24) is arranged at a given height above the partition wall in the first chamber, said body being intended for being heated during operation to a temperature which is substantially higher than the carbonization temperature of the fuel and which screens off a central area of the partition wall.

    • An infra-red radiant burner is disclosed which uses a porous refractory board matrix that is supported by two pairs of frame members that provide a ledge upon which the matrix lies and a peripheral lip means that grips the edge of the matrix. The frame members together with a flat sheet will form between the flat sheet, the frame members and the matrix, a gas-air mixture chamber, while the frame members are made hollow to receive a non-combustible gas which is directed outwardly along a narrow exit path along the sides of the matrix.

    • A radiant for use with a gas heater embodies a pair of upwardly converging front and rear walls formed of aluminum silicate. Connector members also formed of a fibrous aluminum silicate refractory board extend between the walls to retain their lower end portions in spaced relation to each other. Perforations are provided in the front wall for emitting radiant heat and an upper vent opening is provided in the rear wall. A convexly curved lower end portion is provided on the rear wall for imparting rotary motion to the burning gases as they move upwardly between the walls.

    • This invention relates to Stirling engines and to improved methods of operation whereby catalytic oxidation of a major proportion of the fuel takes place in the external combustor.An external combustion unit of a Stirling engine comprises a catalytic combustor having a thermally stable and oxidation resistant monolith made from and/or carrying a catalytic material and including a multiciplity of flow paths for catalytic combustion of combustible gases and injected fuel.The use of a catalytic combuster in accordance with this invention enables a Stirling or other engine fitted therewith to be used in areas such as mines and underwater installations where conventional flame combustion is impracticable or is controlled by stringent regulations.

    • Improved gas-fired radiant heater has porous refractory panel mounted by its edges on a support to define a gaseous combustion mixture plenum from which the mixture flows through the panel to burn at its outer face, and a conduit for non-combustible gas extends along the margin of the panel and discharges the non-combustible gas through the panel all along its margin to keep the combustion mixture from escaping through the panel edges where burning can damage the panel. No further sealing of the panel margin is needed, but the sealing is effected with less of the non-combustible gas if the panel edges are compressed so as to reduce their thickness about 10%. One or more of the margins of a rectangular panel can be arranged as a depending flange with its mounting at least partially recessed so that two or more panels can be juxtaposed at such margins to form an effectively continuous radiating surface of relatively large size. The air seal construction also makes such heaters very practical for firing house heating furnaces.
