    • A coupling for a tube having a coupling body with a throughway open at one end to receive an end portion of a tube, a sealing ring or rings mounted in the coupling body at a location spaced from said open end thereof to engage and seal with the outer periphery of the tube, and a tube latching device for locking a tube in the coupling body. The latching device comprises a first latch within the coupling body to engage automatically with a feature on the tube when the tube end portion has been inserted sufficiently into the throughway to engage with the seals to retain the tube end portion in the coupling body and a second manually operable latch disposed externally of the coupling body engageable with a feature on the tube when the end portion of the tube has been inserted into the coupling body sufficient for the first latch to engage to provide a secondary retention for the tube in the coupling body.

    • A fitting for plumbing systems, such as drain/waste/ventilation (DWV) systems that is chemically and mechanically joinable is described. A socket of the fitting has an interior surface configured for chemically joining with tubing. An exterior surface of the socket includes a plurality of projections extending radially outward therefrom. A collar that includes a sidewall with a plurality of bayonet-style channels configured to engage respective projections is provided. Interaction of the projections with the channels during rotation of the collar with respect to the fitting draws the collar toward the fitting and compresses an O-ring between the collar, socket, and tubing inserted therein to form a fluid-tight seal and/or mechanically couple the tubing in the socket. The collar may include longitudinally depending flanges that are depressed against the tubing by a compression ring to mechanically couple the tubing in the socket.

    • A dry-break coupler attaches to an adapter for loading fluid into the bottom of a tank. The coupler and the adapter can be connected or separated without the loss of fluid, while both fittings are subjected to internal fluid pressure. The coupler is of the type used on a gasoline tank truck loading arm, and the adapter is in accordance with the standards of the American Petroleum Institute. The coupler has a tubular body that defines a central flow passage and a movable valve closure element that opens and closes the coupler flow passage. This valve closure element also actuates a central valve of an adjacent adapter. An adapter latch is mounted upon a first rotatable shaft that is pivotally mounted on the coupler tubular body. A second rotatable shaft that operates the valve closure element is mounted within the tubular body. Portions of both the first and second rotatable shafts extend in substantially parallel relationship. Mounted on the shafts is a mechanism interconnecting the shafts for both pivoting the adapter latch into locking engagement with the adapter before the valve closure element opens the flow passage and holding the adapter latch in a locked position while the flow passage is open. A single handle operates both the first and the second rotatable shafts.

    • A dry-break coupler, of the type used on a gasoline tank truck loading arm, is connectable with a standard A.P.I. adapter, that is located near the bottom of a truck tank, for loading fluid into the tank. The coupler and the adapter can be connected together or they can be separated, without the loss of fluid, while both fittings are continuously subjected to internal fluid pressure. The coupler has a tubular body that defines a central flow passage. Located within the tubular body is a movable valve closure element. This element opens and closes the flow passage of the coupler, and it also actuates a central valve of an adjacent adapter. An adapter latch and a first rotatable shaft that operates the adapter latch are pivotally mounted on the tubular body. A second rotatable shaft that operates the valve closure element is mounted within the tubular body. Portions of both the first and second rotatable shafts extend in substantially parallel relationship. Mounted on the shafts is a shaft interlocking mechanism that prevents rotation of the second rotatable shaft, to open the flow passage to the adapter, without first moving the adapter latch to a locked position. The shaft interlocking mechanism also prevents rotation of the first rotatable shaft, to release the adapter latch from the adapter, when the valve closure element is in a position with the flow passage open.
