    • A bicycle coaster brake hub having a gear-transmission therein is provided with a change-over mechanism between a driving member or clutch always rotatable together therewith and a gear frame including planetary gears and carrying actuators, such as rollers or a clutch, for operating brake shoes of a braking mechanism. The change-over mechanism causes a reverse rotation of the driving member induced by back-pedalling to be transmitted to a ring gear instead of the gear frame, whereby the gear frame is always reversely rotated through the ring gear at any driving speed stage from low to high thus braking the bicycle wheels with a uniform braking effect regardless of what speed stage the gear-transmission is in at the time of braking.

    • In the hub shell of a bicycle or the like a gear shifting mechanism mounted to be axially moveable is such that when the pedal is reversely rotated it is transferred in the axial direction and expands the brake shoes to forcibly press the same against the inner walls of the hub shell, thereby braking the rotation of the bicycle wheel. Thus by transferring the gear shifting mechanism for the braking purpose, it is possible at any time when necessary to secure the most reliable braking effect, in whatever speed changing condition the gear shifting mechanism may be or even if any parts thereof are damaged and even if the wire rope thereof has been extended in protracted use.

    • A down shift mechanism for incorporation in a device such as an assembly tool includes a wrap spring which locks and releases a planetary gear speed reduction assembly to provide shifts between two drive ratios in response to torque throughput. The wrap spring is received upon a drive drum within a cylindrical housing. The ends of the wrap spring are engaged by a pair of relatively rotationally adjustable and fixable spring engaging lugs which adjust the preload of the wrap spring and thus the torque level at which the spring unwraps and lifts off the drive drum and thus the torque level at which the shift occurs. The wrap spring housing is coupled to the ring gear of the planetary gear assembly. When the torque applied to the wrap spring exceeds the preload, the spring unwraps, unlocking the ring gear and planetary gear assembly and downshifting to the speed reduction determined by the planetary gear assembly. An alternate embodiment of the downshift mechanism is also presented.

    • A bi-directional, speed reducing mechanism for use with hand-held power tools comprises a pair of epicyclic gear trains mounted in a common carrier which each independently engage one of a pair of cages or ring gears disposed thereabout. The cages may alternately be locked in a stationary position or released for free rotation by independent activation of one of two identical wrap spring brakes disposed about each of the cages. The mechanism is contained within a generally cylindrical housing suitable for positioning between a conventional unidirectional power tool motor and gear head or powered device. In addition to the reversing capability, speed reduction in the range from 3.5:1 to 9:1 is also achieved by this mechanism.

    • A reversible speed reducing mechanism for use with hand-held power tools comprises a pair of juxtaposed epicyclic gear trains mounted in a common carrier which independently engage a pair of cages or ring gears. The cages may alternately be locked to or released from an outer housing to accomplish the bidirectional transmission of rotational power. The complete reversing mechanism is housed in a generally cylindrical body suitable for mounting between a conventional unidirectional motor and gear head or powered device. Forward or reverse output rotation is selected by moving a control button positioned on the periphery of the reversing mechanism. Speed reduction in the range from 3 to 5 to 1 can be achieved by this mechanism.

    • A tapping attachment with a drive device, which does away with chattering usually encountered when releasing the clutch, by providing cushion springs at both ends in axial direction, and a clutch mechanism having flat projecting surfaces when the input or driving element of the clutch is allowed to move axially to drive the tap directly or reversely. The structure includes a direct-drive clutch with at least one axially projecting portion for engagement with a similar portion on one of two rotating members, between which normal torque is to be transmitted, and a reverse-drive clutch also with a projecting portion for engagement with another such portion on said one rotating member. Spring means are provided for axially biasing the reverse-drive clutch to avoid the chattering when the latter clutch comes into engagement with the last-mentioned projecting portion of the one rotating member.
