    • A shiftable toothed-belt drive, containing an engagement and disengagement device, in order alternately to mesh radially and demesh radially a toothed belt, which is guided around at least two gearwheels, with and from at least one of the two gearwheels. A disengager in the form of two externally profiled pulleys is urged axially along the shaft of one of the gearwheels supporting the toothed belt for radially raising the belt and demeshing the belt from the gearwheel. An engager engages the outside of the belt for tensioning the belt sufficiently to counter the effect of the disengager, move the pulleys apart and mesh the belt with the one gearwheel.

    • It is desired to improve the wear resistance of the valve seat of the check valve in a hydraulic tensioner. The hydraulic tensioner includes a cylinder having a hollow space filled with hydraulic oil. A plunger is slidably mounted in the cylinder. A pushrod is mounted in the hollow space so as to be axially movable together with the plunger with one end thereof protruding from the cylinder. A spring is mounted in the cylinder to bias the plunger and pushrod outwardly of the cylinder. The plunger is formed with a passage through which the pressure chamber and the reservoir chamber communicate with each other. The passage is formed with a valve seat. A check ball is arranged so as to be moved into and out of contact with the valve seat. The check ball is adapted to contact the valve seat when the pressure in the pressure chamber exceeds the pressure in the reservoir chamber, thereby closing the passage. The valve seat is formed of a steel for carburizing and has a surface carbon concentration of 0.55-0.75% to reduce deposition of carbides and to have a surface hardness at least equal to the check ball. This improves wear resistance of the valve seat and thus extends the life of the hydraulic tensioner.

    • In a chain tensioner having a plunger biased to protrude from a housing by a spring, a pair of wedge-shaped cams are received in tapered recesses in the end of the housing, cooperate with racks formed on opposite sides of the plunger, and are urged against oblique seats formed by the tapered recesses by a biasing spring. The cams and racks produce a ratcheting action maintaining chain tension by preventing retracting movement of the plunger. The cams and racks disperse the load imparted to the plunger by the chain, and reduce localized wear, allowing the housing to be made from a light weight material such as aluminum. Accuracy requirements associated with conventional pawl-type ratcheting tensioners are avoided.

    • A sliding contact guide for a chain, or other flexible transmission medium comprises a synthetic resin guide body having a shoe on which the transmission medium slides, and a slotted, plate-receiving portion on the back side of the shoe for receiving a reinforcing plate. The plate-receiving portion is composed of a pair of opposed, longitudinally extending, slot-defining walls. Raised ribs, for sandwiching the reinforcing plate, are disposed on opposed inner surfaces of the walls, and are oriented in the direction of insertion of the reinforcing plate into the slot. The guide suppresses shock noises due to wobbling of the guide during operation, and molding and assembly of the guide are enhanced.
