    • A belt tensioner for a power transmission belt may be provided that operates on an endless path and that utilizes asymmetric motion control. The belt tensioner may have an arm with a belt engaging section and a drum section, a support member for securing the tensioner relative to the belt, where the arm pivots on the support member, and a tension spring that urges the arm to pivot about the support member in a first direction and urges the belt engaging section against the belt with a force to tension the belt. The tensioner also may have a fluid filled chamber inside a portion of the drum section of the arm and a valve pivotally attached to the tensioner so that the valve extends across the fluid containing chamber.

    • A hydraulic damper for providing fluid damping to a tensioner in a drive system that includes a damper cup, which is mounted to the tensioner and configured to rotate about a central axle in tandem with the tensioner, an end plate having an outer face and an inner face, which is attached to the damper cup forming a fluid chamber, a pin attached to the end plate and extending away from the inner face and toward the damping cup, a damping fluid, which is contained within the fluid chamber, a rotatable plate having an opening configured to accept the pin through the rotatable plate and rotate about the central axle, and a fixed plate having an opening configured to accept the pin through the fixed plate, which is fixed to and does not rotate about the central axle. During wind-up and tensioning of the tensioner, a shear force is applied to the rotatable plate moving through the damping fluid to provide damping to the tensioner.

    • In an autotensioner 16 used in an auxiliary drive system A1 for a multicylinder engine 1 configured to suspend cylinder operation, a damper 24 is provided to suppress the vibration of an arm 18 by means of the viscous drag of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF). The damper 24 is provided with an electromagnet 34 which applies magnetic force to the MRF. When some of the cylinders in the running engine 1 are suspended from working, the electromagnet 34 of the damper 24 is excited in response to a signal from an engine controller 38 to apply the magnetic force to the MRF, thereby increasing the viscous drag of the MRF and suppressing the vibration of the arm 18 or a belt span 13a. In this manner, the vibration of the arm 16 of the tensioner 16 and the belt span 13a is suppressed to prevent the occurrence of an unusual sound and the loss of life of a belt 13.
