    • An epicyclic train operates as a speed reducer between an input and an output when a clutch is released, and as a direct drive connection in the contrary case. The selective clamping is obtained by centrifugal weights, counter to biasing springs and to an helical teeth reaction force, which is proportional to the torque transmitted during speed-reducing operation. The reaction force promotes speed-reducing operation when the torque to be transmitted is high. Means are provided for applying a force pulse to the weights when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal. Since, upon a ratio change, the reaction force and the friction forces in the clutch vary so as to stabilize the newly created transmission ratio, a force pulse is enough for initiating a ratio change which will then be stabilized by a spontaneous variation of the reaction force and the friction forces.

    • An improved motorcycle slider clutch which utilizes several original equipment manufacturers components, also an aftermarket basket (34), housing gear assembly (44) and a pressure plate (74). The pressure plate engages the nest of discs (32) when compressed by a number of fingers (82) configured to create linear force when subjected to centrifugal action. An enclosure (100) surrounds the basket (34) and retains the fingers. This action defines the first or mechanical stage of operation. A number of counterbalanced fingers (120) are also rotatably contained in the enclosure (100) but are held from engagement with a restraining hub (142) connected to a fluid pressurized cylinder (136). The second, or pressurized fluid actuated stage, is engaged electrically in a timed sequence relieving the pressure allowing the counterbalanced fingers to exert pressure on the clutch discs and plates at the optimum moment.

    • A centrifugal clutch in which a centrifugal weight is formed separately from two engaging members which are disposed for frictional engagement with each other, the centrifugal weight being displaceable in response to centrifugal force produced therein to cause one of the engaging members to engage with the other or disengage therefrom. When the centrifugal force of the centrifugal weight is smaller than a predetermined value, the two engaging members are kept in one state of engagement and disengagement, and instantly after the centrifugal force has reached the above determined value, the engaging members are shifted into the other state of engagement and disengagement. Further, the centrifugal clutch is provided with a hysteresis characteristic that the engaging rotational speed and the disengaging rotational speed are different from each other.

    • A friction clutch including centrifugal and electromagnetic speed control systems. The clutch consists of an output member rotatably mounted on the drive member, an input member mounted for rotation with the drive member and centrifugal speed sensitive elements mounted on a carrier plate, and arranged to move the input member into frictional engagement with the output member. An electromagnetic coil located below the carrier plate and spaced therefrom provides a flux through the carrier plate which results in eddy currents in the plate and a magnetic drag on the plate. This drag can be varied by the degree of energization of the coil. The speed of the carrier plate controls the amount of pressure or thrust that the centrifugal speed sensing elements apply to the input member to control the clutch torque applied to the output member.

    • The crown wheel of a planetary gear is connected to an input shaft while the planet carrier is connected to the output shaft. The sun wheel is locked by means of a free wheel when the clutch is released. The device then operates as a reduction gear. The sun wheel rotates with the crown wheel and the planer carrier when the clutch is engaged. The axial forces (F.sub.AP, F.sub.AC), sustained by the sun wheel and the crown wheel when in gear-reduction mode, and resulting from the helical tooth configuration, tend through the stop to compress a spring and release the clutch. When in direct drive and beyond a certain torque, the clutch slips, thereby generating the above-mentioned axial forces which compress the spring and accelerate disengaging. The device operates as a reduction gear until the torque on the shaft is reduced, thereby, enabling the spring to re-engage the clutch. For use on the input side of a gear box in order to automatically reduce speed ratios during acceleration, the gear box being itself preferably automatically controlled, especially under the effect of axial forces generated by other planetary gears.
