    • A modulatable power transmission clutch including interleaved clutch plates and having a central power transmitting shaft extending axially through the clutch. The clutch includes a fluid operated movable piston for effecting clutch operation by compression of the plates. The piston has a smaller piston area and a larger piston area, the smaller piston area has fluid flow directed to it a variable fluid pressure whereby the clutch is modulatable. The larger piston area is adapted to have fluid flow directed thereto to effect maximum and unmodulatable engagement of the clutch. A spring loaded normally closed trigger valve controls fluid flow to the larger piston area in response to fluid pressure above a predetermined amount at the smaller piston area. The trigger valve is mounted in the shaft and is normally closed so that pressure fluid is directed to the smaller piston area at a variable fluid pressure whereby the clutch is modulatable. When the valve is open by said fluid pressure over a predetermined amount, the valve permits fluid flow to the larger piston area to effect maximum and unmodulatable engagement of the clutch for full clutch capacity.

    • A clutch apparatus includes a torque cam mechanism and a clutch actuator for compressing a clutch disc pack for clutch engagement through the torque cam mechanism. The clutch actuator includes a first fluid chamber for pushing the torque cam mechanism from a first position for all-time clutch disengagement, to a second position toward the clutch disc pack, and a second fluid chamber for pushing the torque cam mechanism from the second position to a third position for all-time clutch engagement toward the clutch disc pack. At the second position, the torque cam mechanism functions as a one-way clutch by extending axially in response to relative rotation between both sides in one rotational direction.

    • A multiplate clutch is provided with a clutch case and a sleeve fitted in an inner circumferential wall of the clutch case with their piston oilways registered with each other. The sleeve is provided in an outer circumference thereof with at least one notch. The inner circumferential wall of the clutch case has been crimped at a portion thereof into each notch such that a crimped portion is formed to fixedly secure the sleeve on the inner circumferential wall of the clutch case. Preferably, the crimped portion can be formed such that a front surface of the crimped portion is shallower on a side of the sleeve and deeper on a side of the clutch case. The front surface may desirably have an inclination of from 5 to 15°. Desirably, the sleeve can be provided with two or more notches.

    • A pressure-medium actuated clutch that includes a plurality of clutch disks and a piston slidably positioned for movement toward and away from the disk to selectively engage and to disengage the clutch. A pressure chamber is provided adjacent to the piston and communicates with a source of pressurized fluid. A pilot-pressure-operated control valve is provided to control the pressure of the pressurized fluid, and a flow constriction is provided in a conduit extending from the control valve to the pressure chamber. A method for actuating the clutch is also disclosed.
