    • A fastening assembly for use as a pivot joint for a first member and a second member which have alignable openings therethrough. The fastening assembly comprises a fastener having a longitudinal axis and a bushing mounted on the fastener with the bushing having a first end and a second end. The second end of the bushing being formed wherein upon the combined fastener and bushing being mounted within the aligned openings the second bushing end extends only through the opening of the first member whereby upon its engagement with the second member during installation it flares radially outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the fastener and between the first and second members thereby providing automatic retention of the bushing and, resilient spacing between the first and second members.

    • A clutch assembly for disposition in a motor vehicle drive line includes an internal reaction force circuit. The clutch assembly includes a multiple disc friction clutch disposed adjacent an operator assembly which selectively applies force to the friction clutch to selectively transfer torque therethrough. The clutch components are disposed between a flange and a stop on an elongate member which functions as a reaction force member to self-contain the reaction force from the clutch operator. The clutch finds particular application in motor vehicle drive line components such as a rear (secondary) axle wherein it is disposed in pairs to independently control torque supplied to each axle and in applications where it is advantageous to contain or ground the reaction force generated by and associated with the clutch operator compactly within the clutch structure rather than its housing.

    • Differential apparatus which includes input and output members rotatable relative to each other, a clutch mechanism for interconnecting them, an actuator and a cam mechanism. The clutch mechanism includes first and second clutch members rotating with the input and output members, respectively. The actuator limits rotation of the second clutch member relative to the input member to angularly displace the second clutch member relative to the output member. The cam mechanism is provided between the second clutch member and the output member, and includes first and second cam faces rotating with the second clutch member and the output member, respectively. When the actuator operates, these cam faces cooperate to axially displace the second clutch member away from the output member, whereby the second clutch member is axially displaced to engage with the first clutch member.

    • A differential device (11) of the type including a clutch pack (23), engaged by a ball ramp actuator (21), which is initiated by a viscous coupling (19;101). The output of the device (11) is an output shaft (13) which is hollow and extends through the entire axial extent of the device. The viscous coupling (19;101) includes, in the embodiment of FIG. 1, an annular input coupling member (25) and an annular output coupling member (27), within the input member, to define therebetween a cylindrical viscous shear chamber (29). The output coupling member (27) at least partially surrounds the first ramp plate (41) of the ball ramp actuator (21), and is in driving engagement therewith, for improved packaging. The clutch pack (23) and the actuator (21) are disposed about the output shaft (13) and axially retained between snap rings (55,93), so that all axial separation forces generated within the clutch pack and the actuator are taken up within a single member, such as the output shaft (13), rather than being exerted on the connection of the housing (17) and the end cap (15). In the FIG. 5 embodiment, the viscous coupling (101) is in driven engagement with the inner periphery of the first ramp plate (41), with the viscous coupling being of the type including interleaved plates (107,109).

    • A ball ramp mechanism is used to apply an axial force in the same regardless of the direction of the flow of torque whenever there is relative rotation between an input shaft and an output hub using unidirectional grooves in both a control ring and an activation ring where a first index plate limits the rotation of the activation ring and a second index plate limits the rotation of the control ring relative to the input shaft. An electrical coil is used to induce a magnetic field in a coil pole to magnetically couple a coil armature to an intermediate plate and the intermediate plate to an activation plate to energize the ball ramp mechanism.
