    • In a variable compression ratio mechanism for an internal combustion engine employing an upper link, a lower link, and a control link, the lower link includes a crankpin bearing portion into which a crankpin is fitted, a first connecting-pin bearing portion into which a first connecting pin for the upper link is fitted, and a second connecting-pin bearing portion into which a second connecting pin for the control link is fitted. A central connecting portion is provided to connect an axial central portion of at least one of the first and second connecting-pin bearing portions to an axial central portion of the crankpin bearing portion. The central connecting portion has an axial length L1 shorter than each of an axial length L2 of the crankpin bearing portion, an axial length L3 of the first connecting-pin bearing portion, and an axial length L4 of the second connecting-pin bearing portion.

    • An engine has a plurality of combustion cylinders with a first piston reciprocably mounted in each of the combustion cylinders in the conventional manner. The engine head has, in communication with each of the combustion cylinders, a cylindrical recess containing a reciprocably mounted second piston. On the side of the second piston opposite the combustion chamber is a control chamber with inlets and outlets for controlling movement of the second piston. The second piston is used to increase the compression ratio without appreciably reducing the expansion ratio. Alternatively, the second piston may be used as a pump to pump fluid from the control chamber. In yet another alternative method of operation, the second piston can be driven outward within the cylindrical recess to an extent which varies in accordance with power demand, thereby varying the compression ratio in accordance with the power demand.

    • The addition of volume reducing piston 28 to a “Two stroke engine with a plunger” through cylinder head 4 so that volume reducing piston 28 can get between cylinder head 4 and plunger body 11 and reduce the amount of fluid sucked into the engine. Also added to the engine is spring 34 to move volume reducing piston 28, and electro magnet 38 so that volume reducing piston 28 does not move at selected times. When electro magnet 38 is energized, volume reducing piston 28 is caught by electro magnet 38, so that volume reducing piston 28 does not move from cylinder head 4 when plunger body 11 goes to the bottom of its stroke, the amount of fluid to be compressed is not reduced, and the engine operates in a greater power output mode. When electro magnet 38 is not energized, both plunger body 11 and volume reducing piston 28 go the bottom of the stroke, the amount of fluid to be compressed is reduced and the engine operates in an efficient reduced power mode with almost complete expansion of the fluid-fuel charge.

    • Method and device for regulating the phase angle between a first and a second crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. The engine includes primary cylinders that communicate with secondary cylinders and in every primary cylinder there is movably arranged a primary piston that is connected to the first crankshaft and in every secondary cylinder there is movably arranged a secondary piston that is connected to the second crankshaft. The first and second crankshafts are connected to each other by means of a transmission adapted with the device that includes a crankshaft extension for obtaining the control of the phase angle, the extension being fixed against rotation and displaceably connected to one of the crankshafts and via a grooved portion rotationally connected to the second of the crankshafts. When the crankshaft extension in displaced, rotation is obtained in the grooved portion that results in a corresponding phase angle shift.
