    • A mine door system for closing a mine doorway comprises a door hinged adjacent the doorway for swinging relative to the stopping between a closed position and an open position swung outwardly away from the stopping. A keeper is mounted in fixed position relative to the doorway. The system further comprises a trigger-actuated latch mechanism including a detent engageable with the keeper for latching the door in its closed position and a trigger operably connected to the detent in a latched position. The mechanism is constructed and configured so that actuation of the trigger causes the detent to move from a latched position in which the detent engages the keeper for latching the door closed to an unlatched position in which the detent is disengaged from the keeper for allowing the door to be opened.

    • A compact, collapsible and automatically expansible mining canvas is constructed and arranged so that a mine worker may stand under a supported roof section and extend into a newly sumped coal portion a forward section of a mining canvas so as to direct the air flow across the face of a newly mined coal section so as to remove any dangerous gasses and debris escaping therefrom. The mining canvas comprises an upper support and a lower support connected by pivotal intermediate support members and a canvas which is connected there between and which is preferably pleated so as to allow collapsible and expansible operation. Included in this invention is the method by which a miner may stand under an already supported section and extend to within a few feet of the newly mined or sumped face a compact, collapsed but expansible canvas section that is easily transportable to the face and which upon expansion will engage the roof and floor of the mine so as to direct the air flow against the face.

    • A mine stopping panel and method of making it are disclosed. In one embodiment, the panel includes first and second channel-shaped panel members having a telescoping sliding fit one inside the other. An elongate end cap fitted in the first panel member. One or more connections between the first panel member and the end cap hold the end cap against movement relative to the first panel member when an extending force is applied to the end cap tending to telescopically extend the first panel member relative to the second panel member. At least one device on the end cap is configured for engagement with the first panel member to resist telescopic movement of the first end cap relative to the first panel member when a contracting force is applied to the first end cap.     • A door system for closing a doorway in a mine stopping includes a door hinged adjacent the doorway for swinging relative to the stopping between a closed position and an open position. A keeper is mounted in fixed position relative to the doorway. A latch mechanism is cooperable with the keeper for latching the door in its closed position. The latch mechanism has a detent portion and is operable to move the detent portion between a latching position in which the detent portion engages the keeper for latching the door closed, and an unlatching position in which the detent portion is disengaged from the keeper for allowing the door to be opened. The latch mechanism is constructed and configured so that it operates to move the detent portion along a path defined at least in part by an arc centered on a point spaced away from the door whereby the detent portion is adapted to remain in substantial engagement with the keeper to maintain the door closed in the event the keeper moves relative to the door, as in a mine convergence.
