    • An improved pusher-type chain for a conveyor, the conveyor being of the type comprising an elongated base means having a bottom and upstanding side guides or flanges. The base means may be made up of two or more longitudinal sections joined together in such a way as to permit them to be shifted with respect to each other from side-to-side about the juncture therebetween and to be shifted vertically upwardly and downwardly with respect to each other about the same or other juncture. The pusher-type chain is a continuous chain adapted to be driven in such a way that one of its spans moves longitudinally along the upper surface of the base means bottom and between the upstanding side guides or flanges in a conveying direction whereby to advance the material being conveyed along the upper surface of the base means bottom. The chain itself comprises a plurality of rigid pusher elements of improved construction normally extending substantially transversely of the conveying direction. Adjacent pusher elements are joined together by a series of link elements, including a pair of strap links rendering the chain capable of double articulation (i.e., capable of changing conveying direction both horizontally and vertically) without the use of universal joints or link elements made of flexible material. Furthermore, the strap links enable the ends of each pusher element to shift horizontally to positions wherein the longitudinal axis of the pusher element lies at a far lesser angle to the conveying direction than hitherto possible, thus allowing one end or the other of the pusher element to avoid an obstruction lodged or accumulated at one edge or the other of the base means bottom with a minimum of stress on and a minimum of shortening of the conveyor chain.

    • A core eliminator for mining, road working or earth moving machinery in which a bit carrying mounting means is movably secured to a driven element. Means are associated with the driven element and the movable mounting means so as to guide said mounting means at one time into the path of what would otherwise be a core formation, and to guide such mounting means at another time to an out of the way position so that the mounting means may clear the machinery involved. Such means may include resilient, cam, pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic or electric arrangements.In one form of the invention the mounting means is slidably mounted in ways provided in the driven element and urged by resilient means into contact with a cam which extends across a machine member located at one side of the driven element and to which the driven element is secured. In a modification of the invention the slidable mounting means rides on the cam instead of against it. In a further modification of the invention the cam extends along one side of the driven element and is provided with a low profile towards the material being worked and a high profile removed therefrom. The mounting means is pivotally attached to the driven element and provided with means which urges it to extend over the low profile and into the path of what would otherwise be a core formation, the same means urging the mounting means against the cam in the region of the high profile so as to pivot the mounting means to an out of the way position.

    • An endless self-laying tread or track such as used on self-propelled mining machines and the like, the tread or track being comprised of a plurality of articulated crawler pads configured so as not only to effect good ground engagement but also to assist in preventing the tread or track from becoming clogged. A plurality of the crawler pads are arranged in interdigitated relationship and connected by elongated pins. As so connected open ended spaces are provided at either side of the tread for engagement by the teeth of a driving sprocket. By this arrangement such teeth may be wider and thicker. The space occupied by such a sprocket tooth, being open ended, greatly facilitates the dispersement of any accumulated packing between the tooth and the crawler pads in a sideways direction. One or more pins or pintles are used to connect each adjacent pair of interdigitated pads. The ends of the interdigitated portions of the individual crawler pads may be squared off so as to positively engage, and then push therefrom, the surface material on which the tread runs. By arranging the tread so that it may be drivingly engaged by sprocket teeth operating at the open ends of the crawler pads, the interior spaces usually required to receive the sprocket teeth are no longer needed and a single, larger diameter pintle can be used while at the same time providing additional crawler pad bulk about the pintle whereby to beef-up the entire tread structure. The crawler pads may utilize improved grousers or ground penetrating ribs.

    • A trim chain take-up sprocket assembly for a mining machine or the like. The sprocket assembly comprises a pair of opposed and axially aligned spindles constituting mirror images of each other, each spindle having a hub rotatively mounted thereon on suitable bearing means. Each hub has at its outboard end a plurality of sprocket teeth and at its inboard end an annular flange. The hub flanges lie in abutting relationship at the longitudinal center of the sprocket assembly and are detachably joined together. Each spindle at its outboard end has a hydraulically actuable piston-cylinder arrangement adapted to engage an abutment surface on the mining machine whereby the entire sprocket assembly may be shifted longitudinally of the mining machine to take up slack or impart slack to the one or more trim chains engaged by the sprocket assembly. Washer-like spacer means are removably affixable to the pistons of the sprocket assembly to retain the assembly in adjusted position. In another embodiment, the hubs themselves are free of sprocket teeth. The hub flanges are detachably joined to an intermediate sprocket wheel bearing sprocket teeth located at the longitudinal center of the sprocket assembly. In all embodiments the sprocket teeth may be eliminated and an annular flange substituted therefor serving as a roller for the chain engaged thereby.

    • A wedge arrangement for affixing a tool mounting means onto a base member in such manner that substantially no wear occurs between the mounting means and base member. The mounting means has a tapered portion which is wedgingly received within a correspondingly tapered cavity provided in the base member, and that part of the base member which defines the tapered cavity completely surrounds that part of the tapered portion which is seated therein. The mounting means is also provided with a perforation or socket to receive the shank or body portion of a cutting element which has a relatively sharp cutting point or edge provided thereon. This perforation, when the mounting means tapered portion is located in the base member tapered cavity in accordance with this invention, will extend not only into the mounting means but also it may extend within the confines of the base member itself; a plunger arrangement, some times fluid actuated, acting through the wedged mounting means-base member combination, may be provided for knocking out broken cutting elements. The wedge arrangement of this invention is 360.degree. in scope and is such as to prevent relative movement between the mounting means and its base member. Supplemental elements, however, may also be employed in order to insure this.

    • A base member is mounted on the driven element of a mining machine or the like. A bit holder is affixed to the base member in such a way that the bit holder may be readily removed and replaced. The base member and bit holder having cooperating abutment surfaces to sustain much of the resultant cutting forces encountered during operation. A connecting pin is provided to maintain the bit holder in position on the base member. Retaining means are provided for the connecting pin. Such retaining means are located between the ends of the connecting pin so as to lock the connecting pin in position without having to have either the connecting pin or the retaining means extend laterally from the joined bit holder and base member. The connecting pin and its retaining means may readily be removed when it is time to replace the bit holder.

    • A wedge arrangement for removably affixing a work tool or work tool holder to a base member on mining, road working or earth moving machinery, and the like, and being particularly useful in the mining, road planing and earth digging areas. The arrangement is such that the removable member may be readily replaced and wear and tear on the base member greatly reduced to the extent that such base member will not be destroyed or otherwise rendered useless; such base member may be a part which is permanently secured to the basic machine or it may in fact be the machine itself or some integral part thereof. The base member is preferably provided with a slot of a size sufficient to receive both the removable member and a wedge element; such member and element may be placed within the slot from above thereof, lateral entry of the removable member and wedge element into the slot often being unnecessary. Means are provided to move the wedge element so as to effect a frictional engagement between the removable member and the base member to effect an interference fit in which there is no relative motion between these members and thus virtually no wear. (It is possible to reverse this arrangement and provide the removable member with the slot and the base member with a suitable male element which, along with the wedge element, will be received in the slot.) The removable member may be provided with a bit, road planing device or digging tooth, which working elements may in turn be removably affixed to and/or within the removable part.
