    • A roof-drilling system for use in subterranean mining applications and the like in which the drill head of a roof drilling machine is arranged such that the receiving cavity of its chuck is configured having a lost motion association with the drive-in portion of starter and driver drill steel rods. The lower surface of a retainer fixed to the drill head and having a non-circular aperture formed therein serves to define one bearing surface for utilizing the drill head itself to pull the assemblage of drill steel from a completed bore. To remove the drill steel driver component from the drill head chuck, the miner grasps the lowermost portion and rotates it a relatively small amount, for example about 1/8 turn. To provide for interlocking of the various components of the drill steel, i.e. driver component, extension components finishing rods and the like, the tip of the male ends of each component are formed having a shallow groove and each corresponding female socket is provided with a corresponding transversely oriented bore. Conventional wire or its' equivalent is inserted within the bore by the miner in the course of assembling the drill steel during a drilling operation.

    • Improved rotary power slips having a housing for mounting in a rotary table of an earth drilling rig. Air is transferred from a stationary fluid source on the drilling rig to pneumatic cylinders carried by the housing when said housing is static to operate said slips. Transfer is accomplished by expansion of a perforated annular bladder thereby forming an expansive fluid duct between a stationary seal ring connected to the stationary fluid source and an air transfer plate which is rotatable with the housing.

    • Auger apparatus, such as a coal mining machine, adapted to utilize one or more augers. Apparatus is disclosed embodying three augers in which two side augers are driven from a power source, and an intermediate auger is located between, and driven from one of, the side augers. Apparatus is also disclosed having a rigid cutting head assembly comprising three or more augers. Also disclosed is apparatus having a main gearbox connected to adjustable or removable auxiliary gearboxes, so that the apparatus can be adapted to drive one or more augers from a main gearbox. Also disclosed is an auger power system embodying two clutches the first of which, preferably a mechanical clutch, is located between the engine and the transmission and is used to disconnect the transmission from the engine to permit shifting of transmission gears, and the other of which clutches, a nonmechanical clutch such as an air clutch, is located between the transmission and the uager or augers and is used as the operating clutch.
