    • An earth boring bit assembly has a tubular mandrel carried by a casing shoe at the lower end of a string of casing. The casing shoe has stabilizer blades spaced circumferentially apart from each other. A cutter arm seat is formed on the leading edge of each blade at a lower end of the casing shoe. Windows are formed in and spaced circumferentially around the mandrel. A cutter arm is pivotally mounted within each window of the mandrel and movable from an extended position located within one of the cutter arm seats to a recessed position within its window. The cutter arm seats support the cutter arms for torque and axial weight. A sleeve inside the mandrel prevents the cutter arms from pivoting to a recessed position until the sleeve is moved to a released position.

    • A drill bit assembly includes a driver adapted for attachment to a down hole pneumatic hammer. A pilot bit is coupled to the driver in a manner permitting rotational and axial movement between driver and pilot bit. A series of underreamer arms are disposed intermediate the driver and the pilot bit and engage a centrally disposed cam block on the pilot bit. Pivot pins of the underreamer arms are journaled in and move with the driver during partial rotation of the driver during arm deployment and retraction. Passageways in the driver and pilot bit direct compressed air to the working surface of the bit for discharging particles upwardly through channels in the bit and driver. Inclined surfaces on the underreaming arms cooperate with the lower end of a casing to contribute to are retraction prior to removal of the assembly through the casing.

    • A retractable drill bit system (10) comprises a drive sub (18) which is adapted for connection to a lower end of a drill (12), a tool (20) for installing and retractable drill bit segments (22) from the drive sub (18); and an insert (24) for selectively locking the bit segments (22) to an end of the drive sub (18) and releasing the bit segments (22). A plurality of recesses (5B) are formed about an inner circumferential wall at one end of the drive sub (18) and a landing seat (32) formed about the inner wall upstream of the recesses (58). The area of the interior wall between the landing seat (32) and recesses (58) is profiled with a series of tapered and level surfaces. The tool (20) includes a slidable cradle (176) extending from one end about which the bit segments (22) are held during installation and retrieval. The bit segments (22) being held in place about the cradle by an elastic band (198). The insert (24) is provided at one end with a series of keyways (218) which locate over the bit segments (22) when the bit segments are locked to the drive sub (18). The insert (24) is always retained within the drive sub (18). Bit segments (22) are carried by the tool (20) to the drive sub (18) and locked in place by the insert (24). The tool (20) can then be withdrawn and the drill (12) operated in the normal manner. To receive the bit segments (22), the tool (20) is relowered into the drill and then withdrawn a short distance to retract the insert (24) so that the bit segments (22) collapse back onto the cradle (176) and can then be withdrawn from the drill (12).

    • A drill bit for use with earth drilling equipment, the drill bit having a body and movable cutting members or blades variably positionable between a first position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is generally equal to or less than the diameter of the drill bit body and a second position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is greater than the diameter of the drill bit body. The second, expanded position is assumed by the cutting members when they are in contact with the bottom of a hole and are thereby urged upwardly relative to the bit body. The first, retracted position is assumed by the cutting members when the drill bit is being tripped into or out of the hole and, because the cutting members are essentially retracted relative to the bit body, the drill bit does not become jammed downhole. A fixed-blade adaptation of the invention is also contemplated.

    • Drill tools with eccentric bits for drilling a hole having a large diameter generally include a bit for swinging out to an eccentric position for drilling, and for swinging into a non-eccentric position for removal from a tubular casing. Relatively complicated structures are required for effecting bit movement, and it is often difficult to remove the bit for replacement or repair. A drill assembly offering a solution to both problems includes a mandrel for rotatable mounting in a tubular casing, a bit rotatably mounted in the mandrel, the bit and mandrel normally rotating together in one direction with the bit eccentric with respect to the mandrel, whereby the bit can bore a hole larger in diameter than the casing, a head on the bit for engaging a formation to stop rotation of the bit, shoulders on the bit and mandrel for retaining the bit in the eccentric drilling position, and inclined cam surface on the bit for engaging the bottom of the casing when the bit is moved upwardly to cause the bit to rotate in the other direction (opposite to the drilling direction) to a release position in which the bit is aligned with the casing for movement therethrough, and second shoulders on the mandrel and bit for limiting rotation of the bit to the release position. The shoulders on the mandrel and bit are in the forms of projections which overlap in the vertical direction, each projection defining approximately one-quarter of the cylinder for rotation between the bit extended and the bit retracted positions.

    • An apparatus for creating annular cavities in the bottom of drilled holes in any medium having a body, an axle within the body at one end and rotated by a conventional drill, a reamer secured to the axle at its other end, an inner part enveloping the axle and an outer part enveloping the inner part, both parts being eccentric and rotatable with respect to each other. Their respective eccentricities are such that when opposing each other in opposite directions, the axle is parallel to the outer part. Joint rotation of the parts causes the reamer to move in a planetary manner. The outer part may be held stationary or dragged along by the inner part for joint rotation. Channels are provided within the parts to the reamer to supply cooling water to the reamer and to remove waste material generated by the reamer.

    • A rotary well-drilling bit lowered through a drill string to a special orienting, positioning and aligning sub attached to the bottom of the drill string with the aid of mud pressure with the bit approximately 90.degree. from its normal operating position. The drill bit is prepositioned before entering the drill string and utilizes a drill bit positioning means to properly orient and position the drill bit at the bottom of the borehole. Once properly positioned and oriented, a wireline attached motor turns an assembly shaft which raises the drill bit into its bit receptacle. Removal of the drill bit is accomplished by relowering the wireline attached motor and turning the assembly shaft to loosen the shaft from the drill bit and raising the wireline, wireline motor, assembly shaft and drill bit through the drill string.
