    • A method and apparatus for transporting and assembling a drilling rig is disclosed. The drilling rig of a preferred embodiment of the present invention utilizes specialized positioning pads integral to the side boxes of the drilling rig to facilitate the connection of the center drill floor of the drilling rig to the side boxes of the rig. A preferred embodiment of the present invention may also utilize a specialized positioning dolly and an adjustable fifth-wheel truck connection for transporting the mast to the drill site, assembling the mast sections together, and positioning the mast for connection to the drill floor of the rig. The result is a unique drilling rig design and sequence for assembly that significantly reduces the time required to transport the rig from location to location and to assemble the rig at the drill site.

    • The drilling vehicle comprises a chassis movable over ground, a tool arm, a drilling tool operatively mounted to the tool arm and defining a drilling extremity and a selectively powered tool arm actuator assembly attaching the tool arm to the chassis. The tool arm support comprises: a first tool arm actuator allowing rotational displacement of the tool arm about a vertical axis; a second tool arm actuator allowing linear translation of the tool arm along a first horizontal axis between two limit positions; a third tool arm actuator allowing linear translation of the tool arm along a second horizontal axis which is perpendicular to the first horizontal axis, between two limit positions; a fourth tool arm actuator allowing rotational displacement of the tool arm about a third horizontal axis; and a fifth tool arm actuator allowing pivotal displacement of the tool arm about a fourth horizontal axis which is perpendicular to the third horizontal axis. The position and orientation of the drilling tool drilling extremity is controlled with the first, second, third, fourth and fifth tool arm actuators acting on the tool arm.

    • A drilling control system provides, in one aspect, advisory actions for optimal drilling. Such a system or model utilizes downhole dynamics data and surface drilling parameters, to produce drilling models used to provide to a human operator with recommended drilling parameters for optimized performance. In another aspect, the output of the drilling control system is directly linked with rig instrumentation systems so as to provide a closed-loop automated drilling control system that optimizes drilling while taking into account the downhole dynamic behavior and surface parameters. The drilling models can be either static or dynamic. In one embodiment, the simulation of the drilling process uses neural networks to estimate some nonlinear function using the examples of input-output relations produced by the drilling process.
