    • A window lift mechanism for raising and lowering a window in a vehicle door includes a support bracket mounted to the window and a motor supported on the support bracket. A vertical rack is mounted to the door and is positioned immediately adjacent the window, and a vertical guide track is also mounted to the door parallel to the rack and immediately adjacent the window. A pinion gear driven by the motor is supported on the support bracket and engaged with the rack to permit vertical movement of the window. A slide is supported on the support bracket and engaged with the guide track to provide support as the window is raised or lowered. Alternatively, a second rack and pinion are used instead of the guide track and slide.

    • A manual window regulator in which a pinion rotatably carried by a window glass and driven by a manual handle is held in engagement with a rack which is fixed to extend in the direction of movement of the window glass, so that a manual rotation of the handle causes the pinion to roll along the rack in meshing engagement therewith so as to drive the window glass thereby opening and closing a window. The transmission of rotation from the handle to the pinion is effected through a tape stretched between a drive gear rotationally driven by the handle and driven gear coaxially fixed to the pinion. The rack and the pinion are usable also as the parts of a power window regulator. The manual window regulator therefore can be easily converted into a power window regulator by using an electric motor for driving the pinion in place of the unit including the handle, the drive gear and the tape.

    • The invention relates to a window regulator comprising a generally flat tape having sufficient flexibility to follow a curved path of substantial radius but being sufficiently rigid to transmit in compression, when guided in a functionally rigid track, sufficient force to regulate a vehicle window, said tape having at one side a series of transversely extending substantially rack shaped teeth, the ends of said teeth being spaced from the edges of said tape to leave flat side guide portions, and a functionally rigid but bendable track comprising a channel having reversely bent guide flanges spaced to receive the toothed portion of said rack.A drive pinion is in mesh with the rack teeth, and preferably the track is curved to present a concavity to the drive pinion.
