摘要： A process includes applying a slurry to a surface of a metallic article to produce a slurry film on the surface. The slurry is composed of a liquid carrier, chromium and aluminum, and an agent that is reactive with the chromium and aluminum to form intermediary compounds. The article and slurry film are then thermally treated at an activation temperature at which the agent reacts with the chromium and aluminum to form the intermediary compounds. The intermediary compounds deposit the chromium and aluminum on the surface. The thermal treating also diffuses the chromium and aluminum into a sub-surface region of the article such that the sub-surface region becomes enriched with chromium and aluminum.

摘要： A method and treating material are presented for forming a mixed-carbide layer of at least one Va-Group element and of chromium on the surface of a carbon-containing ferrous-alloy material. A molten treating bath is prepared by introducing one or more Va-Group elements in oxide form and chromium in metal or alloy form or by introducing one or more Va-Group elements in metal or alloy form and at least one chromium oxide into a molten bath composed of boric acid, of at least one borate or of a mixture thereof. An article of carbon-containing ferrous alloy is immersed and maintained in the molten treating bath until a mixed-carbide layer is formed on its surface. The mixed-carbide layer formed on the surface of the article is very smooth, wear resistant and high-temperature-oxidation resistant.

摘要： A process of converting an outer layer of an object made of a refractory metal, such as titanium, into a carbide of the refractory metal. A molten metal, such as molten lithium, is placed adjacent the outer surface of the object. The lithium does not react with the titanium, nor is it soluble within the titanium to any significant extent at the temperatures involved. The molten lithium contains elemental carbon, that is, free carbon atoms. At high temperature, the carbon diffuses into the titanium, and reacts with titanium atoms to form titanium carbide in an outer layer. Significantly, no other atoms are present, such as hydrogen or oxygen, which can cause problems, because they are blocked by the molten lithium.

摘要： Slurry coating composition for selectively enriching surface regions of a metal-based substrate, for example, the under-platform regions of a turbine blade, with chromium. The slurry coating composition contains metallic chromium, optionally metallic aluminum in a lesser amount by weight than chromium, and optionally other constituents. The composition further includes colloidal silica, and may also include one or more additional constituents, though in any event the composition is substantially free of hexavalent chromium and sources thereof. The coating composition can be used in a process that entails applying the coating composition to a surface region to form a slurry coating, and then heating the coating to remove any volatile components of the coating composition and thereafter cause diffusion of chromium from the coating into the surface region to form a chromium-rich diffusion coating.
