    • A sintered material containing high-pressure phase-type boron nitride and a binder is provided. The high-pressure phase-type boron nitride is contained in an amount of from 50% to 78% by volume, and the balance is a binder phase. The binder phase comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of nitride, carbide, carbonitride, and boride of Ti, nitride, boride and oxide of Al, carbide and boride of W, nitride, carbide, carbonitride and boride of Co, and carbide and boride of Ni, or a mutual solid solution thereof. The binder phase forms a binder phase which is continuous in a sintered material texture. The weight of metal components Al, W, Co and Ni which are present as compounds in the sintered material is from 3% to 20% based on the sintered material. The sintered material is excellent in crater resistance and capable of realizing a long tool life, even under the condition that the temperature of the cutting edge becomes high and the impact is large, as in high-speed interrupted cutting of hardened steel where the cutting speed V becomes at least 150 m/min.

    • The polycrystalline cubic baron nitride cutting tool has a particle size in the range of from 10-17 microns. In addition to CBN, the tool has from 2%-15% by weight of a refractory compound selected from the group consisting of titanium carbonitride, titanium aluminum carbonitride, titanium carbide, titanium nitride, titanium diboride and aluminum diboride. When using one of the carbonitrides, the carbon to nitrogen proportion is preferably in the range of from 30 atomic percent carbon and 70 atomic percent carbon to 70 atomic percent carbon and 30 atomic percent nitrogen, and preferably is about 50/50. In addition, there is an infiltrate containing aluminum and/or silicon. A quantity of diamond crystals more than stoichiometric with the amount of silicon infiltrated is included in the composition for forming silicon carbide. The cutting tool is not formed on a cemented tungsten carbide substrate so is substantially free of cobalt.

The feature thereof consists in a cutting tool compring, as an edge part, a cubic boron nitride sintered compact containing cubic boron nitride having an average grain diameter of at most 1 &mgr;m, in which the cubic boron nitride sintered compact has, at the said edge part, an I(220)/I(111) of (220) diffraction intensity (I(220)) to (111) diffraction intensity (I(111)) ratio of at least 0.05 in X-ray diffraction of arbitrary direction and impurities are substantially not contained in the grain boundaries.
