    • This apparatus is a tongs-like device for remotely scooping up cargo and personnel, comprising two identical elongated members pivoted at a selected distance from the device's top with a pivot pin. The lower portions are curved and vertical with cushions attached to their inner surfaces to enable the apparatus to hold either cargo or a person securely in place. Each inner lower surface has an inflatable pillow with a perforated spongy cushion attached to it and removable for replacement. The cushions' perforations enable a snatched person to breathe easily, thus avoiding any possibility of suffocation, while being hoisted upwards by hoist equipment. A sturdy net is fastened to the shoulders of the lower portions and draped for the person to sit on. In another technique a pliable plastic sheet, having pie-shaped triangular cuts, allows a person to pass through in one direction but not in the reverse direction.

    • This improved cable-scooping hook device with upper and lower portions and with a pivot pin and hubs is better able to snatch and scoop up a load cable than previous designs. Its tongs-like configuration can have a combination of magnetic hammerheads, weights on top and an extension spring to help force its lower portions, including jaws, to separate, when suspended cargo makes a touchdown onto a platform. To ensure that the load cable is snatched, a bar magnet is suspended from one or both hubs of the pivot pin. A ferrous metal load cable is attracted by the suspended magnet and held in place until the device's jaws close, as a load is lifted by the hoist cables. A person holding a long pole with a hook on its end guides the device to the load cable's location. When the hook reaches the load cable, attached to a load, the device is lowered to make contact with it, whereupon the cable is quickly snatched and scooped up, aided by the magnet's attraction. Another technique is described and illustrated for aiding a nonmagnetic cable to be snatched and scooped up.

    • This is a cable-scooping cargo hook device, pivoted near its center and weighted on top to help force its lower portions to automatically separate upon touchdown on a platform to discharge its load cable. By having the device sit on one of its jaws, the device can be made to avoid rescooping a discharged cable, in its simplest version. Also to assist in discharging its load cable are two inwardly protruding extensions with hammerheads, located above the pivot pin. These hammerheads have magnets of like polarity facing each other to produce a repulsive force and cause the device's jaws to open immediately when the hoist cables slacken, a feature to assist in the jaws straddling and scooping up a load cable. Also an electromagnet to perform the same function as the permanent magnets is described. Then a technique involving additional electromagnets enables the device not only to discharge a loaded cable while suspended, but also to improve its automatic loading ability. In addition to the use of one or more electromagnets for achieving positive load retention, positive load retention techniques are shown which are completely mechanical, requiring no electrical energy source.

    • A releasable connector for connecting a shackle bolt on a liferaft to the depending end of a davit cable is set in a safe condition for boarding and lowering of the liferaft. In the safe condition, a hook member supports the shackle bolt and is itself locked in its supporting position by a latch member. A coupling spring connected between the hook member and the latch member operates to one side of its dead-center position to urge the latch member into the locking position. A first downward pull on a lanyard causes a pawl member to engage a tooth on the latch member to move the latch member from its locking position to a drive position in which the coupling spring operates to the other side of its dead-center position and urges the latch member into its drive position. When the liferaft takes up a floating position on the water, the load on the sackle bolt is relieved and automatic release of the shackle bolt effected under the action of the coupling spring which turns the hook member out of its supporting position. If the automatic release fails, the lanyard is given a second pull which brings the pawl member, which has returned under spring loading, to engage a second tooth on the latch member and cause the latch member to execute a driving movement in which it displaces the hook member out of its supporting position for release of the shackle bolt. A first pull on the lanyard results only in the cocking of the connector for automatic release and cannot result in manual release. A second pull on the lanyard is required to effect manual release.

    • A supported ring (11) is locked in the load retaining eye (12) of a hook by a locking jaw (14) carried by a rotatable cam (44) which holds the locking jaw (14) in the locking position by engagement with a releasable latch (50). The locking position is maintained by a coil spring (64) connecting the latch (50) and cam (44). A lanyard (70) is connected to the releasable latch (50) for disengaging the locking edge (56) of the latch (50) from the cam (44) to arm the hook assembly (10). The spring (64) also urges a cam ejecting surface (48) against the load carrying ring (11) and maintains pressure on the ring (11) after arming so that when the load is released the ring (11) will be ejected from the eye (12). The lanyard (70) extends from the releasable latch (50) to the cam (44) where it is engageable with the cam (44) for manual rotation of the cam (44) to eject the ring (11) in the event of spring (64) failure.
