    • In a mailpiece stacking system, a pressure pad is used to direct incoming mailpieces from a mailing machine used with the system onto a feed deck, where the mailpieces are stacked against a stacking wall in the system. To properly handle mailpieces including window envelopes, the length of the pressure pad is selected in accordance with the invention such that it effectively deflects each mailpiece to land beyond the window part of any window envelope preceding thereto on the feed deck. Advantageously, the risk of having the mailpiece getting caught by an edge of the window part, resulting in a congestion, is avoided. In addition, among other things, a catch nub is included in the pressure pad for hooking onto a stub shaft mounted on the frame of the system. The nub hooks onto the stub shaft when the pressure pad is raised to allow it to stay in the raised position. Moreover, to effectively attach the stacking system to the mailing machine, the stacking system provides thereunder a hook having a C-shaped opening. The hook is used to be slidably engaged with a support knob underneath the mailing machine through the opening. The resulting engagement aligns the mailing machine with the stacking system to allow proper feeding of the mailpieces from the mailing machine to the stacking system, notwithstanding the vibrations occasioned by the operation of the mailing machine and the stacking system.

    • In a method for transporting sheets of paper the individual sheets are conveyed successively in a conveying direction to a stop unit and at least one sheet is held at the stop unit to form a set at the stop unit. The stop unit is activated for conveying the set formed at the stop unit when a sheet of a next set to be formed at the stop unit overlaps the set formed at the stop unit. The device for performing the method has a collector with transport elements for transporting sheets along a transport path and a stop unit positioned in the transport path and operated intermittently for forming sets of sheets and further transporting the sets formed thereat. A control device is connected to the stop unit. The collector further has a first sensor device connected to the control device which sends an activation signal to the stop unit when a sheet of a next set to be formed overlaps a set already formed at the stop unit.

    • A sheet treating apparatus includes a stacking tray, a delivery rotary member, an endless belt member, and a traction device. The stacking tray has a stacking surface for receiving and stacking sheets thereon and a stopper portion for regulating the end portions of the sheets. The delivery rotary member delivers the sheets to the stacking tray. The endless belt member contacts with and acts on the upper surface of the sheets on the stacking tray, and feeds the delivered sheet so as to pull the end portion thereof into the stopper portion. The traction device pulls a portion of the endless belt member in a predetermined direction. During sheet feeding caused by the endless belt member, the traction device is operated in conformity with the height of the sheets stacked on the stacking tray to thereby control the contact pressure of the endless belt member against the sheets stacked on the stacking tray so as to become substantially constant. The stacking tray is inclined so that the downstream side thereof in the delivery direction of the sheet may become higher. The delivered sheet is switched back to return with the direction thereof changed over, and the stopper portion is provided on the downstream side in the direction of return of the sheet. The endless belt member is supported with a portion of its inner peripheral surface twined around the delivery rotary member and is rotated with the delivery rotary member.
