    • A method for scaling a media storage library is provided, wherein the library comprises a plurality of media storage cells and at least one media picker robot. The method comprises connecting a new physical component to a section of the library. Examples of new components include additional robots, storage cell arrays, media players, as well as connecting a second adjacent library by means of a pass-through mechanism. Control software integrates this new physical component into the function of the library by auditing the content and function of the new component. During the connection and functional integration of the new component, the rest of the library continues its current operations. The method may further comprise defining at least one work zone within the library, wherein robots do not enter the work zone but continue to operate in other areas of the library.

    • A container pick and return system is provided having a two-tiered flow rail conveyor system that includes an inclined upper set of feed flow rails forming an input conveyor assembly and a lower set of inclined return flow rails forming an exit conveyor upon which a unit load may roll. At the front end of the system is a transfer conveyor assembly that receives a loaded container. The line worker may then operate a damper control pedal that permits the container to be positioned at any desired angle greater than the angle of the input conveyor. This permits enhanced accessibility of the contents of the container regardless of the height or arm length of the line worker or the size and shape of the container contents. When the container is emptied by the line worker, the transfer conveyor assembly is triggered and the empty container is automatically lowered and transferred to the exit conveyor where it rolls down the exit conveyor to the rear of the system for reloading. Upon transfer of the empty container, the transfer conveyor assembly automatically returns to an upper position for receipt of another loaded container and subsequent angular presentation of the contents of the container.

    • A horizontal belt conveyor delivers a mass flow of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry at a variable rate to a deflecting station where successive increments of the mass flow are caused to descend into an upright duct. The increments at the deflecting station are overlapped exclusively by two arcuate baffles which deflect the oncoming articles into the duct. The baffles are pivotable relative to each other about parallel axes and include intermeshing tongue-like end portions remote from the respective axes. A linkage couples the baffles to each other in such a way that any pivotal movements of one of the baffles entail predetermined movements of the other baffle.

    • The material handling system includes a frame supporting a horizontally extending axle. A rotatable superstructure is rotatably mounted to the axle. The rotatable superstructure is generally circular and includes a plurality of spaced apart horizontal support rod members which are generally parallel to the axle and are arranged about the outer circumference of the rotating superstructure. Engagement clips attached to each of the support rod members are sized and configured so as to grasp the rims of metal storage barrels. The clips extend from points near the central portions of the rods to out past the ends of the barrels. The weight of the barrels forces the clips into snug engagement with the barrel rims. Thus, the barrels are held on a rotating wheel-like structure which may be motor driven to cause the frame to rotate about the horizontal axle.

    • A handling installation disclosed, in particular for cigarettes. Known installations for handling cigarettes have a reservoir for temporarily storing the cigarettes, a maker (10) for the cigarettes and a packer (11). The maker (10) is arranged upstream of the reservoir (12) and the packer (11) is arranged downstream of the reservoir (12). In known installations, synchronising the action between reservoir (12), packer (11) and maker (10) causes problems. In the disclosed installation, the working speed of the maker (10) and the packer (11) is controlled depending on a measured filling level of the reservoir (12). When the filling level of the reservoir (12) is low, the working speed of the maker (10) is increased, when the filling level is high, said speed is decreased. On the contrary, the working speed of the packer (11) is increased when the filling level is high but reduced when the filling level is low.
