    • A safety system for online servicing of a media library is provided, wherein the library comprises a plurality of media storage cells and at least one media picker robot that moves along the media storage cells, and wherein the library is contained within an enclosure having at least one access means. The safety system detects whether the access means in the enclosure is open or closed and operates the robot in the media library in one of two corresponding modes. If the access means is closed, the robot operates in a normal mode at a first specified speed. If the access means is open, the robot operates in a safe mode at a second specified speed that is slower than the first speed of the normal mode. In another embodiment, while in safe mode, the picker robot is excluded from moving within a restricted zone in the library.

    • An automated storage library structure, a structure of at least one robot operating within the automated storage library, and a method of connecting the robot to test equipment to facilitate testing. The robot is operative to move about the automated storage library on a guide structure. The test equipment is disposed in a diagnostics center associated with the automated storage library. Communication between the robot and the diagnostics center is provided through a main connector, disposed adjacent to the guide structure at a predetermined position and electrically connected to the diagnostics center, and a test connector mounted on the robot's chassis and electrically connected to the robot's electronics. A second robot may be used to support testing of a sick robot. Support includes pushing or pulling a sick robot to the mating connector, providing an alternate communication path between the sick robot and the diagnostics center exclusive of the main connector, and conducting tests on the sick robot in place of the diagnostics center. Test equipment at the diagnostics center may include optical test equipment as well as electrical.

The robotic mechanisms are operable for performing the same types of tasks. The variables include attributes of each robotic mechanism type and attributes of each of the robotic mechanisms, media objects, and media object players. In response to attributes of a job request being transferred into the decision algorithm, the decision algorithm selects a robotic mechanism best suited for performing the job request based on the attributes of each robotic mechanism type and the attributes of the robotic mechanisms, media objects, media object players, and the job request.

The storage library further includes tracks disposed adjacent to media object storage cells for enabling access to each of the media object storage cells, and powered rails associated with the tracks for providing energy.     • A method and system for the storage and retrieval of media cartridges in an automated storage library having media cartridge storage cells each housing a single media cartridge. A robotic mechanism is operable to move through the storage library to access the media cartridges in the media cartridge storage cells. A vibration sensor is associated with the robotic mechanism for generating a vibration signal indicative of vibration of the robotic mechanism. A controller is operable with the vibration sensor for processing the vibration signal to determine if the vibration of the robotic mechanism is abnormal. In the event that the vibration is abnormal, the controller generates a warning signal to warn the operator of the storage library of a possible problem prior to actual failure of the robotic mechanism. The controller is also operable to associated the vibration of the robotic mechanism with particular storage library locations to warn the operator of possible problem locations of the storage library.

    • A data storage library and method of operation are disclosed wherein access at least to part of at least one robotics mechanism from the data storage library's exterior is permitted. Access is accomplished through a service port in the library's housing. Access to the storage cells, and thus the data cartridges sitting therein, from the library's exterior is blocked. Blocking access to the storage cells may be provided by a geometry of the service port itself, or by a combination of a door and the robotics mechanism being serviced filling the opening created by the service port. For robotics mechanisms operating on a track, part of the track may be routed through the service port to bring the robotics mechanisms to the exterior of the library for maintenance purposes.
