The crane apparatus includes a parent crane displaceable along the foundation for unloading containers from a vessel moored alongside the foundation and placing the containers on a first platform of the parent crane, and a sibling crane displaceable along the foundation beneath the parent crane independently of displacement of the parent crane for loading containers from the first platform onto over-the-ground vehicles. The parent crane has a first trolley/spreader hoist movable along a first boom for unloading containers from the vessel and placing them on either the first platform or a second platform of the parent crane, and a second trolley/spreader hoist movable along a second boom for loading containers from the second platform onto another vessel or over-the-ground vehicles.

    • The present invention relates to a dockside crane for moving cargo between a dock and a water-borne vessel. The crane has an elongated girder extending horizontally over the dock and the vessel. The crane can vertically raise and lower the girder to change its elevation, so as to minimize distance and time travel for the cargo. A trolley moves horizontally on the girder, and has a cargo engaging device which is lowered to and raised from cargo locations on the dock and vessel. The cargo engaging device can be raised sufficiently adjacent to the trolley, and may be held tightly thereagainst, to permit large horizontal accelerations and velocities with virtually no attendant sway of the trolley or cargo. Preferably, paddles extend downwardly from the trolley to beneath the center of gravity of the cargo, to further ensure no sway is encountered. Advantageously, an operator cab is provided which moves independently of the trolley, so that the operator can view the load from a variety of angles throughout the cargo moving process.

    • A method and apparatus for loading and/or unloading water vessels including providing a pair of floating elongate pontoon members and locating the same substantially parallel to and spaced from each other substantially perpendicular to the edge of a dock or quay so as to define an area between the pontoon members for accommodating a water vessel. The vessel which is to be loaded or unloaded is directed between the pontoon members. Mobile crane apparatus is supported on the pontoon members on either side of the vessel and travels along the length of the pontoon members, and has hoisting apparatus which horizontally extends over the width of the vessel. In another embodiment, an elongate pontoon member is located substantially parallel to the edge of the dock or quay defining a vessel accommodating area between them. Mobile crane apparatus is movably supported on the pontoon member and quay on either side of the vessel and has a hoisting apparatus horizontally extending over the width of the vessel.

    • A method of loading and unloading a vessel with heavy objects whereby an object is vertically lifted, for instance from a vehicle drivable on a quay, by means of a crab, gantry or the like which together with said object is moved horizontally along girders from the lifting position to a position above the hold of the vessel. Said girders are arranged on the quay, extending in a cantilever manner out beyond the edge of the quay substantially up to the adjacent edge of the hold. From said cantilever girders the crab together with the object is moved over to and along horizontal extensions of said girders. These extensions, which are entirely supported by the vessel, bridge the hold. When the crab with the object has reached a suitable position on said extension and above the hold, the object is lowered into the hold. Also described is an equipment intended for carrying out said method into effect.

    • Cargo handling apparatus for transferring cargo between a cargoreceiving area on a dock and the hold of a ship moored alongside such dock. The apparatus includes a frame carried on mount means disposed on the dock and formed with a boom projecting outwardly over the side of the dock and over the hold of the ship. An endless track is carried from the frame and is formed with a pair of turned back loops connected together by a pair of coextensive side portions, one of the side portions projecting over the cargo-receiving area and one of the loops projecting over the hold. The other side portion of the pair of side portions cooperates with the other loop of the pair of loops to form a return from the one loop to the one side portion. A plurality of trolley devices are mounted on the track and carry respective hoists having cargo engaging means suspended therefrom. Operator platforms are carried from the respective trolleys and control means is provided so the operators can move the trolleys into position on the loop disposed over such hold and the respective hoists actuated to lower the load engaging means into such hold to retrieve cargo from the hold and then advance the trolleys over the return and onto the one side portion for lowering the cargo retrieved onto the load-receiving area.
