    • A webbing sensor for a vehicle safety restraint retractor. The sensor comprises an inertial member, mounted for rotation coaxially with a retractor spool, a pawl for engaging the spool and locking it against rotation under emergency conditions, and a calibration spring biasing the inertial disc so that it tends to rotate with the spool unless there is a sudden acceleration or deceleration of a value such as to overcome the resilience of the spring. The spring is connected to the spool via the pawl so that relative rotation between the disc and the spool results in movement of both ends of the spring, preferably by approximately the same distance. Throughout the locking procedure, the spring force remains substantially constant and thus the bias torque on the inertia disc remains substantially constant, and the locking performance of the sensor is improved.

    • A webbing retractor for webbing belt retraction and restraint of a vehicle occupant during sudden deceleration. In a preferred embodiment, the webbing retractor includes a spring, and is for connection to an axially rotatable shaft having a locking device. The locking device includes a rotator coaxially rotatable with the shaft and a locking mechanism. The spring resiliently urges the shaft to retract the webbing belt, which can be ordinarily unwound against the spring tension. During sudden deceleration, the locking mechanism is activated and limits or prevents unwinding of the webbing belt. The retractor includes wall portions provided at the rotator and the shaft, with the spring disposed between these portions. A hole for insertion of the spring is provided between the wall portions. The hole is sized such that the spring must be at least partially compressed for insertion therethrough. The arrangement facilitates insertion of the spring, and stable connection of the spring in the assembly.

    • There is provided a webbing take-up device of which weight can be reduced while maintaining lock strength. A single lock plate which is engaged with an internal gear ratchet at the time of sudden deceleration of a vehicle is held in an accommodating portion formed in a holding portion of a base lock. At the time of sudden deceleration of a vehicle, the lock plate is moved by being guided in a guide hole of a V gear and is engaged with the internal gear ratchet. Further, reaction force generated in the above-described engagement is utilized and the holding portion of the base lock is caused to contact by pressure the internal gear ratchet and the base lock plastically deforms and is thereby engaged with the internal gear ratchet. Accordingly, the base lock and the internal gear ratchet are in a locked state at two facing locations on the base lock in a radial direction of the base lock. In addition, since only one lock plate is used, the weight of the device can be reduced while maintaining the lock strength thereof.

    • A belt retractor has a frame (1; 101), a belt reel rotatably mounted about an axis in the frame, a control disc (10; 110) coaxial with the belt reel and a reduction gear unit (7, 15, 16) which translates rotation the belt reel into a reduced rotation of the control disc. The control disc has a cutout window (11; 111) between a pair of detector elements. The first (8; 108) of these detector elements is connected to the belt reel for joint rotation and the second (12; 112, 113, 114, 115, 116) is arranged as fixed relative to the frame. The window is located on the same radius as said detector elements relative to the axis. The arrangement provides a precise measurement of the absolute angle of rotation of the belt reel.

    • A seat belt retractor operates in two distinct modes: a first, Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR), mode; and a second, Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR), mode. A toothed ratchet wheel is mounted to rotate with a spool that is biased in a seat belt webbing rewinding direction. A sensor detects an emergency condition of the vehicle. A vehicle acceleration sensor lever responsive to the sensor engages the ratchet wheel in the event of an emergency condition. The vehicle acceleration sensor lever performs two functions: it locks the retractor when the sensor detects accelerations and decelerations greater than a predetermined magnitude and it also prevents rotation of the spool in the seat belt webbing pay-out direction when operating in its second mode. A cam connected to the spool via a step-down gearing arrangement acts as a switch.
