    • A card printer comprises a type group consisting of a number of types being worked in a desired printing pitch. The types are in a lined-up arrangement in a horizontal direction and are received in a type receiving case so as to carry out an impact printing at their front. A correspondingly solenoid and a corresponding armature group electromagnetically drives each type in response to a control system. A feed system controlled by a control system feed successive cards and a ribbon in a horizontal direction facing the type group. At every place feed of the card by the feed system, a position on the card for a letter or a code to be printed and a lined-up position of a corresponding type are electronically checked and selected by a control system, and, only when the two card and type positions agree each other, a type or types in or are successively or at the same time driven electromagnetically by the corresponding solenoid and the corresponding armature so as to automatically print on the card.

    • In a printer adapted to receive any of a plurality of petal-type printing thimbles, each of the printing thimbles is provided with a recognition code-forming portion containing a plurality of protuberance-forming positions, the arrangement of protuberances at the protuberance-forming positions defining a thimble recognition code which identifies specific character position, hammer impression, and character spacing tables. These tables identify the character positions, hammer impression forces and character spacings required to print characters designated by character codes when the recognition code identified printing thimble is mounted on the printer. A mechanical means, mounted on the printing hammer cover of the printer carrier unit, detects the presence or absence of protuberances at the protuberance-forming positions of the code forming portion on the printing thimble, to generate a binary recognition code received by the printer processor. The mechanical means includes an electrical switch, selectively opened or closed by the presence or absence of protuberances.

    • An LED/photodetector structure is disclosed positioned to cooperate with a daisy wheel print element of a daisy wheel printer and a light interrupter such that under microprocessor control, a stepping motor will rotate and home the daisy wheel print element, sense the escapement pitch corresponding to that element, sense the font weight or impact force level associated with that print element and then cause the carrier to be translated to the left frame, thereby engaging the light beam interrupter with the left frame and forcing it into the light beam indicating the presence or the carrier at a known spacial position for homing of the carrier position.The data carried by the print element in the form of apertures formed in the hub thereof and are all spacially positioned within one semicircular portion of the print element hub.

    • A type element interchange mechanism is incorporated into a high speed serial printer with rotary print wheel and linear carriage movement. A number of print wheels are selectively mountable onto a carriage, which carries a print wheel, print hammer, and print hammer solenoid, from one or more removable carousels, each carousel typically carrying several different type font print wheels. Print wheels are transferred directly between the carriage and a carousel, without the necessity of intermediate transfer mechanisms or steps, through the controlled linear translation of the carriage and the carousel. The print wheel-carrying carousel has a plurality of arms and is rotated to present the desired arm in position for transfer of a print wheel with the carriage. Microprocessor controls are provided so that print wheel changes are implemented automatically in response to input signals defining the desired font type. A computer controlled initialization program is provided which in addition to providing a startup and reset procedure also automatically identifies the print wheel identification numbers by reading coded slots located in the center hub of the print wheels.
