    • The present invention can be used either as a joystick controller having three dimensions of control or as a three dimensional pressure sensor for signature verification or other purposes. The invention comprises a flexible web including a first deflection zone which extends between first and second spaced apart points on the web. A second deflection zone extends between third and fourth spaced apart points on the web. The first and second deflection zones intersect to divide each of the zones into first and second sections. A first fixed yoke includes first and second arms which are coupled to the first and second points on the web. A second floating yoke includes first and second arms which are coupled to the third and fourth points on the web. A web deflection device is coupled to the second yoke to transmit the mechanical input deflections to the web. Sensor means is coupled to the first and second deflection zones of the web for generating an electrical output signal representative of the mechanical input displacements.

    • An electrically passive keyboard is provided with an array of keys. Each key is provided with an actuating bar which when depressed cooperates with a plurality of coded shutters. Each shutter is arranged to intercept a beam of light passing from light projecting elements to light collecting elements. Light pulses generated at a light source are coupled to the projecting elements with fiber optic cables. Decoding logic is coupled to the light collectors with fiber optic cables. Delay elements are provided in series in the fiber optic cables so that the decoding elements receives a plurality of binary coded light signals in a predetermined timed sequence which are converted into binary coded electrical signals at a point remote from the electrically passive keyboard.

    • An input signal recognition circuit for a control system having an array of momentary switching elements (hereinafter referred to as "keys") whose number is larger than that of the array input terminals, which prevents erroneous control system operation which may occur upon simultaneous actuation of a plurality of keys. The input signal recognition circuit comprises a keyboard including a plurality of keys arranged in a matrix, signals for sequentially sensing the actuation of keys on the respective columns of the matrix, an input buffer section which responds to the sensing signals to store the key data keyed in through the key actuation, a memory section for temporarily storing the key data and a recognition section for checking the contents of the memory section to detect whether any key has been actuated and for recognizing whether a plurality of keys in different columns of the matrix have been actuated. Only when a single key is actuated, or a plurality of keys in the same column are actuated, does the circuit identify that the input data is effective and generate a given control command signal in the control system.

    • A self-encoding key switch is formed of a body having a well for storing a pool of mercury, a plurality of contact chambers with encoding contacts therein and having channel portions communicating with the well of a size to resist flow of the mercury therethrough due to surface tension of the mercury, and a plunger movable into the well to force the mercury through the channel portions into the contact chambers to momentarily connect the encoding contacts thereby providing tactile feedback, self-encoding and N-key rollover. A keyboard system utilizes a plurality of the above-described self-encoding key switches along with a register, and a strobe contact is disposed in a contact chamber of each key switch such that the trailing edge of the signal from the strobe contact precedes the breaking of electrical connection between a supply contact in the body and the encoding contacts to trigger the register and enter coded data from the encoding contacts. A keyboard formed of a plurality of the above-described, self-encoding key switches is constructed with the bodies of each of the key switches formed of a single piece of plastic material mounted on a base member carrying electrical connectors forming the contacts in the key switches. In one embodiment, the electrical connectors are in the form of conductor bars extending through the base member which is integrally formed with the switch bodies as a single unit. In another embodiment, the base member has surface carried connectors in the manner of a printed circuit board.

    • Analog output signals from a synchro stator winding are converted to binary form by gating each analog signal with a relatively high frequency square wave which is shifted in phase by an amount equal to the physical phase displacement of its associated stator winding. These signals are then summed, filtered and limited to form a signal which is phase shifted in proportion to the synchro shaft angle. Comparing this phase shifted signal with a fixed reference signal provides a gated signal with pulse widths proportional to synchro angle. These pulses may then be converted to a binary signal containing angular information.
