    • An apparatus includes an inkjet assembly having inkjet nozzles through each of which ink flows at a nominal flow rate as it is ejected from the nozzle onto a substrate. Ink is held under a nominal negative pressure associated with a characteristic of a meniscus of the ink in the nozzle when ejection of ink from the nozzle is not occurring. The apparatus includes recirculation flow paths, each flow path having a nozzle end at which it opens into one of the nozzles and another location spaced from the nozzle end that is to be subjected to a recirculation pressure lower than the nominal negative pressure so that ink is recirculated from the nozzle through the flow path at a recirculation flow rate. Each recirculation flow path has a fluidic resistance between the nozzle end and the other location such that a recirculation pressure at the nozzle end of the flow path that results from the recirculation pressure applied at the other location of the flow path is small enough so that any reduction in flow rate below the nominal flow rate when ink is being ejected is less than a threshold, or a change in the nominal negative pressure when ink is not being ejected is less than a threshold, or both.

    • A thermal ink jet recording apparatus includes an ink film (21) having a plurality of apertures (22) for retaining ink and movable along a path in the form of a loop, the ink film having an electrical resistance material (35) extending in a direction perpendicular to the path. A thermal head (3) contacts one of opposite surface of the ink film for applying heat to it corresponding to a pattern to be printed. An ink container (26) is located on the path upstream of the thermal head (3) and contains solid ink which melts when heated, and a device is provided for applying a voltage across the edges of the ink film. In this manner, the heated ink film causes the ink to melt thereby filing apertures (22). The ink film (21) has first and second opposite surfaces. In the first embodiment, the first surface and opposite edge portions of the ink film on both surfaces have an electrical resistance layer (35) while the remaining portions of the second surface have an insulating layer (34). In another embodiment, stripe-like electrical resistance layers (37a, 37b, 37c) are provided on the first surface and on opposite edge portions of the second surface. Finally, in another embodiment, electrical resistance layers (39a, 39b, 39c) are provided on the first surface and on opposite edge portion of the second surface, the resistance layers on the second surface being displaced relative to the electrical resistance layers on the first surface.

    • The disclosure relates to a cartridge type supply device for use with a portable, one-hand-operable labeling machine of the type including a printing mechanism with printing types arranged for imprinting inscriptions on each of a series of labels traveling along a predetermined path through the machine toward a dispensing opening of the machine. The ink supply device comprises a cartridge holder pivotally supported at one end thereof within the labeling machine in a readily detachable manner and a replaceable inking roller cartridge supported detachably by the other end of said cartridge holder, said cartridge including a rotatable inking roller. The cartridge holder is spring-biased to urge the inking roller onto surfaces of the printing types of the printing mechanism of the labeling machine. When the inking roller cartridge is used up, the cartridge holder can be taken out of the machine together with the used cartridge. A cartridge box for housing spare inking roller cartridges is provided.

    • A printing ribbon guiding and re-inking means is positioned to guide a continuous looped printing ribbon through a 180.degree. twist between the exit and entry points of a ribbon cartridge. The guiding and re-inking means includes a twist-locator or arrestor comprising a pair of opposing elongated flanges, for passing a ribbon therebetween, positioned between the exit and entry points of the ribbon cartridge to positively locate the twist in the ribbon in a particular area along its path of travel. This prevents movement of the twist into other areas and other ribbon-carrying mechanisms, where the twist could cause jamming or undesirable ribbon twisting. A spool support means integrally coupled to the flanges carries a re-inking spool which both applies ink to the ribbon and guides the ribbon between the flanges and the cartridge. The spool orients the transverse position of the ribbon to be substantially the same as the transverse position of the ribbon at the entry to the cartridge. The opposing flanges orient the ribbon so it is rotated 90.degree. in a direction transverse to movement with respect to the orientation of the ribbon at the entry to the cartridge.
