    • A printhead carrier having a zero clearance bearing arrangement includes a first open-faced bearing coupled to a dampener frame. The first open-faced bearing has a first bearing surface positioned to contact the cylindrical guide surface of a guide rod of an imaging apparatus. A second open-faced bearing is coupled to the dampener frame. The second open-faced bearing has a second bearing surface positioned to contact the cylindrical guide surface of the guide rod. The guide rod is diametrically positioned between the first open-faced bearing and the second open-faced bearing. An elastic foam member is interposed between the first open-faced bearing and the dampener frame. The elastic foam member is compressed to exert an expansion force between the first open-faced bearing and the dampener frame to load the second open-faced bearing on the guide rod in a zero-clearance relationship with the guide rod.

    • A carriage guide mechanism for a printer enables using plural rolling bearings to move a carriage along a guide shaft with no play or vibration. The carriage bearing units of the printer carriage guide mechanism have three rolling bearings each that hold the guide shaft from three directions. The outer ring of each rolling bearing makes line contact with the outer ring roller surfaces, which each face a different direction and are formed on the guide plate of the guide shaft, and contact therebetween is maintained by the urging force of a flat spring. Because chatter and vibration, particularly play and vibration around the center axis of the guide shaft, can be prevented when the carriage moves, a drop in print quality due to vibration of the printhead caused by carriage chatter or vibration can be reliably prevented.

    • A printing mechanism is disclosed which has a cylindrical type wheel rotatably supported on a driving shaft and carrying a plural number of types arranged on it circumferential surface at regular angular intervals and protruding from the surface. For effecting printing, one of the types is selected and the selected type is struck against a recording medium making use of a energy of rotation. The present invention is directed to improvement in such type of printer. The improvement comprises an elastic member through which the type wheel is supported on the driving shaft. The elastic member is fixed to the driving shaft. The type wheel is disposed concentrically with the driving shaft and spaced from a platen by a determined distance. The elastic member is engaged with projections formed on the inner circumferential surface of the type wheel so as to transmit rotation of the driving shaft to the wheel. After selecting a time point for printing a selected type, the type wheel is stopped rotating and moved, as a whole, toward the platen eccentrically to the driving shaft so as to strike the selected type against the platen for effecting printing. After printing, the elastic member is disengaged from the inner projections thereby allowing the type wheel to move back toward the driving shaft while the type wheel being still in the state substantially stopped rotating.

    • A mechanism for encoding continuously moving documents. Documents are transported between a plurality of fixed dies and a plurality of electronically controlled hammers. An ink bearing ribbon is interposed between the documents and the fixed dies and is momentarily transported at the same velocity as the documents. As the documents traverse the plurality of fixed dies, the electronically controlled hammers are cycled, in a selected sequence and at selected positions, to provide the desired encoding. In those applications wherein the cycle time of the electronically controlled hammers is too slow to allow identical encoding in adjacent positions, a second plurality of fixed dies and electronically controlled hammers may be located adjacent to the first plurality or interspersed among the first plurality of fixed dies.

    • A supplemental printer is mounted piggy-back fashion atop a conventional high speed chain printer or other form of computer output printing equipment; and prints, upon the same print-out sheet as the high speed printer, information generated by the same electronic digital computer to which the high speed printer responds. The supplemental printer is capable of printing postage or other special indicia not easily incorporated into the print symbol repertoire of the high speed printer. In order to make the supplemental printer operate rapidly enough to be compatible with electronic data processing equipment, its print impression is divided into parts printed by individual type segments, each actuated by its own individual print solenoid. Some of the segments are equipped with solenoid-actuated variable numerical print modules for the purpose of printing postage or other variable numerical information. After printing, the segments return to positions at unequal levels in order to deter "wiping off" unauthorized postage or other valuable print impressions.
