    • A holder (10) for stamps (20) used to imprint identifying characters into the surface of a material which can be magnetized. The holder includes a frame (12) having a channel (18) formed therein to receive the stamps, which are held in place therein by means of a rod (28) which is received through holes (34, 36) formed in end plates (30, 32) attached to the frame, and through groves (24) formed in the stamps. A punch (66) held by a cylindrical holder (60) is inserted in holes (58) formed in the frame above the stamps and is struck by a hammer or the like to imprint the characters formed on the stamps into the surface. The holder is held in position on the surface by means of magnets (46, 48) which are adjustably attached to support assemblies (14, 16) attached to the end plates.

    • A serial printer wherein a print head is reversibly displaced transverse to a print medium by an open looped grooved rotating cylindrical cam is provided. A unidirectional drive shaft is operatively coupled to the cam by a drive gear engaged with planet gears mounted on a clutched rotary member for rotating the cam when the rotary member is stationary. An intermediate gear is intermittently engaged with the drive gear for changing the rotating direction of the cam upon engagement of the intermediate gear between the drive gear and planet gear. The rotary member includes geared regions adapted to be engageable with a print medium advancing assembly for advancing the recording medium during rotation of the rotary member when the drive of the print head is stopped and the direction of the cylindrical cam is about to be reversed. Advancing the print medium during change of direction of the print head when the cam is not being driven reduces the load placed on the motor, thereby permitting reduction in power consumption.

    • Lubrication of a compacting resilient belt used in a web compacting system is facilitated by maintaining a constant depth pool of lubricating liquid between a fluid compactor bar and the inside surface of the belt on the belt approach side of the compactor bar. The compactor bar includes a liquid dam sidewall portion that is provided with liquid overflow weir openings so that the level of the surface of the pool can be automatically maintained at a predetermined height. The belt is used in conjunction with a drum to form a nip space between the outside surface of the belt and a peripheral sector of the drum, the nip space receiving the web to be compacted in the web running direction in a conventional manner, the outside surface of the belt being compressed against the drum by the compactor bar, which bears against the inside surface of the belt while the belt is driven through the nip space. The pool of lubricant is confined laterally by side plates or air jets directed inwardly towards the edges of the belt. Liquid lubricant is supplied to the pool area by a suitable supply means, such as spray nozzles, and excess lubricating liquid overflowing the weir openings is removed during operation of the apparatus. The system is particularly useful in providing lubrication between the belt and the compactor bar while minimizing the occurrence of leakage around the edges of the belt due to excess lubricant supplied to the pool area.

    • A machine for printing, embossing or die cutting characters or indicia on a longitudinally extending strip of material to produce a sign or label. The strip is fed into the machine subjacent a carousel or drum in which a plurality of circumferentially spaced slugs are carried, each slug being adapted for producing a printed, embossed or die cut character on the strip upon proper actuation. The carousel is rotatably mounted to permit a selected slug to be appropriately positioned at the station whereat the character is produced on the strip. Actuation of a handle moves the selected slug downwardly and adjacent to the strip, and further handle movement forces the slug against the strip to perform the character producing operation thereon. Release of the handle frees the slug from the strip, incrementally advances the strip into position to receive a succeeding character, and raises the slug back into the carousel so that the latter may be rotated to position the next required slug character for operation.

    • Signals identifying alphanumeric characters for a plurality of lines of printing are temporarily stored in a memory while recording paper moves through a printing station having a plurality of rows of character-imprinting elements. Each row is comprised of identical character-imprinting elements and the number of rows is at least equal to the number of distinct characters which may be printed. A control system repetitively examines the memory to detect momentary coincidences between positions on the moving paper and any imprinting elements of any row which correspond to a character to be imprinted at those positions. The control system activates the appropriate imprinting elements as such coincidences occur to effect a very fast multiline form of printout. The rows of imprinting elements are defined on a flat stationary unitized member which may readily be removed and replaced and in which individual rows may be replaced as a unit and the associated actuating elements are also unitized for rapid replacement. Line spacing is adjustable and the system is adaptable to the printing of graphical or pictorial data.
