    • A device for molding a container is disclosed. The device will include a first member including an opening defined therein. A manifold member, operatively attached to the first member for channeling a plastic fluid to an insert means, is included. The insert means are positioned within the opening located within the first member, with the insert containing a first slide and a second slide. The first slide and second slide will have an extended position and a contracted position, and wherein the contracted position defines a cavity profile. The second member will have a first end that contains a plurality of core pins. A piston is adapted to the second end of the second member for reciprocating the second member into engagement with the insert so that the first slide and second slide are moved to the contracted position. During the reciprocating motion, the plurality of core pins are received in the cavity profile. The apparatus will further comprise heater means for suppling a heat to the fluidized plastic. Also described herewith is a method of casting a container with a mold, with the container being used as a medical vial. ?

    • A system for molding optical attenuators that have a lens portion and a supporting portion includes a molding machine containing a mold, an extractor robot and optical inspection portion, and a controller that assesses the inspection information and send control signals to the molding machine and mold. The mold includes a cavity and a core which define a space in which the supporting portion and the attenuator are formed. The cavity and core are separable from each other by an actuating motor of the molding machine subsequent to each injection cycle to permit removal of each molded optical attenuator. The mold also includes a core pin, movably located in the core element. The core pin has a proximal end defining a surface of the lens portion and a distal end remote from the molding space. A core pin motor is coupled to the core pin, through a number of intermediate elements, so that the core pin can be moved relative to the core element to adjust a thickness of the lens portion. The movement of the core pin motor is controlled by the controller that is supplied with a stepped index or table of optimum thickness values corresponding to selected values of attenuation desired for the lens portion. The index or table also specifies an acceptable value on each side of each step in the stepped index defining an acceptable range of variability, with values outside the specified range requiring corrective action. The controller preferably includes a comparitor that compares the result of the optical measuring with a selected one of the stepped index values and associated ranges. The controller then generates a signal to the core pin motor based upon the amount to which the result of the optical measurement differs from the desired range for the selected stepped index value.

    • An improved molded plastic elbow and a related mold assembly and manufacturing method are provided, wherein the elbow defines an internal flow path having a smoothly radiused inside turn. The elbow is formed by injecting plastic material into a tubular mold cavity formed by closed mold members in cooperation with a pair of slidably retractable core units of circular cross section and having distal ends in mating, angularly set end-to-end contact to form the internal flow path having a turn formed along the length thereof. Each core unit comprises an outer core pin to form an outer portion of the flow path and including a ramped track for slide-fit mounting of an inner slide segment which forms an inner portion of the flow path and further includes a curved inside edge to form a portion of the smoothly radiused inside turn. Initial retraction of each outer core pin from the mold cavity permits relative advancement of the inner slide segment along the ramped track toward a centerline of the flow path, sufficiently for the curved inside edge of the inner slide segment to clear the radiused inside turn of the molded elbow and thereby enable interference-free linear withdrawal of the core unit from the molded plastic part.

    • This invention relates to a mold design, injection molding machine and a method for forming a multi-layer plastic article by over molding where the second layer of the article includes a portion having a different geometrical profile than the first one. The novel injection mold and injection molding machine for producing over-molded articles comprises an array of one or more cores which engage arrays of one or more first cavity and arrays of one or more composite cavities. Each composite cavity is formed from the combination of a second cavity and a cavity extension which carries at least a portion of the different geometrical profile, such as a thread. In one embodiment, the cavity extension comprises a pair of cavity portions which are mounted adjacent the core to laterally moveable slides on a movable plate, that can be a stripper plate. During molding of the first layer, the cavity extension elements are moved nulloutnull of alignment with the first cavity and during molding of the second layer the cavity extension elements arc moved nullinnull to form the composite cavity with the second cavity so that only the second layer replicates the geometrical profile of the composite cavity. In another embodiment of the invention, the cavity extension is a single element which is moved between a disengaged position wherein the core can be inserted into the first cavity and an engaged position wherein the core is inserted into the composite cavity.
