    • A method of fastening a button or the like to a garment such that the garment will be buttoned up after the fastening operation, wherein said button is composed of plastic and initially comprises a button head and a stem projecting from the button head, the stem having an outer end for piercing the garment and for deformation by ultrasonic vibration, a central section characterized by a substantially smooth profile, and an inner section flaring into the button head, the method comprising the steps of: providing a button hole in a first portion of the garment; placing said first garment portion in an overlying relation with a second portion of the garment; positioning said button such that the button head is disposed on the side of said first garment portion opposite to said second garment portion and such that the stem extends through the button hole and pierces at least partly through said second garment portion; and deforming the outer end of the stem by ultrasonic vibration thereof. A machine for practising the method is also disclosed.

    • A contacting head for making a wire connection, particularly an aluminum or gold wire connection on an integrated circuit by ultrasonic or thermocompression bonding, in which a contacting arm is provided with a concave contacting tool or a capillary, and supplies ultrasonic or heat energy. The concave contacting tool has a gripper, or the capillary has a wire clamping device for effecting a feed or clamping of the wire during movement of the contacting arm. A driving unit provides for threading the wire through a wire guiding device which is entirely enclosed, and through the concave contacting tool or the capillary. The driving unit also provides for controlling the wire tension and produces a gas stream in the enclosed wire guiding device. A magnetic arrangement with a permanent magnet and a non-ferrous core provides for electrodynamic contact pressure control of the contacting arm and for control of the gripper. The wire supply spool is encapsulated and mounted on a base, together with a housing which is vertically movable on the base and mounts the contacting arm, the driving unit and the gripper or wire clamping device. The wire guiding device connects the wire supply spool to the driving unit, and is in the form of an elastic metal tube for the wire.

    • Apparatus for use with an ultrasonic plastic welder in which an ultrasonic horn on a movable welding head produces sonic vibrations along a first axis generally normal to the contacting surfaces of the workpieces to be welded together, the apparatus rendering the welder suitable for welding metals. The apparatus includes a coupling member removably connected to the distal end of the horn and extending transversely thereof and having coupled thereto a workpiece-engaging member capable of adjustment along a second axis parallel to the first axis. A force-applying member is connected to the welding head and extends therefrom toward the workpieces, with the workpiece-engaging member being adjusted to contact the lower end of the force-applying member at a fulcrum point so that axial vibration of the coupling means by the horn serves to pivot the workpiece-engaging member about the fulcrum point to effect a vibration transverse to the first axis at the contacted workpiece. Static force is applied to the workpieces along the second axis by the movable head acting through the force-applying member and the workpiece-engaging member.

    • A welder using an ultrasonic vibration includes a vibration direction converter for diversely converting the direction of vibration generated by a vibrator according to the properties of a welded material, so that welding efficiency is improved. The vibration direction converter is made to be disassembled or assembled, so that the replacement of the rod is easy when it experiences vibration fatigue. Efficiency is maximized because plural welding operations can be made simultaneously, since plural vibration-transmitting directions due to a symmetrical multiple structure are possible by means of the vibration-direction converter.
